How far away are you going to school? I am looking at 29 hours, by car. Any tips on how to handle the distance?

By Oceanblue52 (Oceanblue52) on Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 08:16 pm: Edit

Wow. I'm only going six.

In your case, you should definitely break it up over 2 or three days. Bring lots of music, magazines, especially if you're driving through Kansas (no offence to anyone, it just 400 straight miles of fields...). I guess you'll be shipping stuff, UPS is good. Where are you driving from/to?

By Excusememixed (Excusememixed) on Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 08:47 pm: Edit

The distance between South Carolina and Massachusetts or Rhode Island.

By Wdlynn (Wdlynn) on Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 08:58 pm: Edit

I'll most likely stay in state in VA, so my drive will be three hours max.

short enough to make vacation trips home easy, long enough to dissuade the parents from "dropping in" ;)

By T2opine (T2opine) on Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 09:10 pm: Edit

I'm going 6 1/2 hours away from the Philly suburbs to Pittsburgh. Even though it's a long drive it's not like it's a difficult drive, so it's not all that bad.

Im going only 3 hours....from southern orange county to UCSB....i feel that its far enough to feel independant and all but close enough to come back for a weekend if i feel homesick

ill be anywhere from 12-19 hrs away if i can go outa state... less i look at other colleges

lol, I'll technically be traveling to the same place I've been going for the last 4 yrs, as my high school is on the same block of my future college, Columbia. So 5 min from home for me (I'm gonna stay on campus though).

About 8-12 hours...NJ to NC

By L0serchild99 (L0serchild99) on Sunday, March 21, 2004 - 10:29 pm: Edit

i might go all the way from NY to CA...that's around 49 hrs of driving nonstop, or 9 hrs of sitting on a plane (+1 stop somewhere)

The closest is a 4 hr plane ride

I guess I'm going to bring the stuff i need, and buy the stuff that i can't bring on the plane w/ me. ALthough I could UHaul it...lol

I'm going about 32 hours by car- so I'm actually flying always. I may take one driving trip only one time if I ever decide to take a car.

I'm going from Wyoming to New Hampshire btw.

By Karen415 (Karen415) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 02:17 am: Edit

I'm only going 1 hour away by car... it's way too close, but my family needs me close to them(i'm the first one leaving home, plus some of my family members are sick). I know they'll respect my privacy though, and not just show up unexpected. Plus, I cant go home if I need to, so I guess it wont be that bad. I'd miss them if I went really far away.

By Oceanblue52 (Oceanblue52) on Monday, March 22, 2004 - 09:19 pm: Edit

but Peterline, its such a scenic drive...jk. I should know, I drove from IN to CA in June and then CA to PA in August, without a stereo or airconditioning. It was one hell of an adventure over 7 days, I never want to attempt a move like that again. It was awful, we carted a 125 lb dog in the back seat and had 2 cats in the driving part of the truck. AND we hitched a second car for the first trip. DO NOT attempt this. You're very smart to pay extra money to fly and ship your stuff.

I'm not sure exactly where I'm going yet (thanks a lot April 1st) but I do know I'm not gonna be anywhere near Chicago. Since I applied to out of state schools faraway I'll end up either in the New England area or somewhere in the deep south. I'll end up being one of those college kids who flies home during the big 3 (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Summer).

most likely situation: i'll pretty much be going as far away as possible while staying on mainland US. i live in CT, i'm going to school in the bay area in CA. (95% sure)

option two: (depending on what happens come april 1) 45 min away by car

By Bear363 (Bear363) on Sunday, March 28, 2004 - 01:42 am: Edit

Hey, I'm from Seattle too. I'll be either traveling down the Pacific coast to LA, About a 16 hour drive non-stop (2 hours by plane), or to Indiana, about a 30 hour car drive (4 hours by plane). Who said California to PA is a 29 hour car drive? Try about 45-50 hours non-stop! From New York to Washington State, it is about a 5.45 hour plane ride. By the way, if anybody is from the WA area, I live in Issaquah. I am either going to go to USC or Notre Dame.

Hey, I used to work at a UPS store so i know a little about shipping. If it's big packages (like bigger than a breadbox) or heavy packages, go with UPS. If small, go with the postal service. NEVER ship anything postal from a UPS Store, it's cheaper just to bring it to the post office yourself and ship it from there.

By Jon (Jon) on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 07:10 pm: Edit

heartsofpaper - i go to berkeley and live an hour away, interestingly enough.

it's great. you have so much flexibility if you want to go home, and if you don't want to go home, you don't have to. college is just such a great, different experience that it'll feel so different from where you live. the only downside is that the "bay area" might be too familiar to you, if you want to go someplace completely new and in a different region, but if you crave familiarity, then i guess that's a good thing too.

NYC doesn't have suburbs? how so? of course the city isn't a suburb; that's why it's called a city...i'm wondering if you're serious...

Charlotte, NC to Claremont, CA

I don't want to calculate how long of a car drive that would be. It's a 3 hour planeride, time zones inclusive. :)

about 1300 miles, 4 hour plane ride, I don't even want to think about how long it will take to drive there

"nyc does not have suburbs"

umm yeah i live there. western and central long island, plus southern counties in upstate new york and a good chunk of northeast new jersey and southwest connecticut are ALL nyc suburbs.

and there are some very suburban-like areas in the bronx (although they are technically urban).

way to go!

haha yeh poor saps! I'm going a greuling 2 1/2 hours away...Orange County to Santa Barbara. Though I won't have my car (I'm selling it), so coming home will be an ordeal every time :-/

By Mark2kay (Mark2kay) on Thursday, May 06, 2004 - 10:18 pm: Edit

once again nyc does not have suburbs, new york state does_and for most part new york state sux, eavery is always refering to city most o time).

i live in the bronx, so i know for a fact there are no suburbs or suburb-like places. the most you will find are town houses(a feww actually have breathing room from another house), but stores are still walking distance, its not a suburb.in the bronx.also how can u have nyc suburbs in a diffrent state, youre funnny =).

Southern California to Massachusetts!

By Silverliningd (Silverliningd) on Saturday, May 08, 2004 - 12:23 am: Edit

Umm, the phrase "NYC suburbs" is correct. The suburbs aren't, of course, a part of the city...hence the name suburb. It is an adjacent area. For instance, I've lived in the suburbs of Washington, DC (which happened to be in Maryland). Five minutes from my house in Baltimore are the Baltimore suburbs-- the area not IN the city, yet next to it. Get it? Got it? Good. Just a matter of phrasing.
