Hello. I thought I put this question in college life I might get more answers from kids actually at NYU. Anyway, I'm a senior in high school and want to study theatre in college. I definitely want to continue acting, but I want to learn about other aspects of theatre such as directing and playwriting as well. I also would like to have a very strong liberal arts background, I do enjoy academics. Sooo....should I apply to Tisch or Gallatin? Thank you!

Hello there- I am about to enter NYU Tisch as a freshman in a couple weeks! I would say that you should definetly apply for Tisch. Not only is it one of the best theatre schools in the US but it will give you exactly what youre looking for. They have several actual woarking studios that they place the students in and the training you recieve differ from studio to studio. and i am pretty sure that at least one of those studios are designed to teach every aspect of the theatre business. when you audition you recieve all that info and you tell them which studio you want to be placed in, ultimately it is their decision but I was placed in my first choice. and even if you dont, after three (or 2, i cant remember) yrs you can move to other studios. it would probably give you all the specifics on the Tisch web site. Good luck! I hope this big long message helped!

Akr031, thank you thank you thank you for your advice. I did some research and the Playwrights Horizon Theatre Company seemed to be what I'm looking for. What studio are you in? Oh also, sorry if I'm wasting your time or anything, but could you explain to me exactly how the auditions work, how long they are, who is there, etc. Thanks!

Thank you so much! And its no problem at all- if i had someone to tell me this a yr ago i wouldve been so happy...I live in AZ so I went to LA for my audition. it was in a hotel. you give them a pic & resume, do two contrasting 2 min monologues and then they talk to you for a bit. But first they sat everyone down (parents included) and talked all about each studio and how intensive this all is, how competitve it all is, etc. Also about how essential it was to give theatre kids a rounded education focusing heavily on the humanities (which was really really good to hear, esp. for the parents!) and then i was called up first and i was soooooo nervous. it was only 1 guy, so not all that intimidating thank god. and i did my pieces, just one right after the other, and then he talked to me for a bit. they are really looking for people who are comfortable w/NYC so he was happy to hear i was from NJ and had visited the campus (do the visit!!) he just asked about my experience and the program in my high school and also what i have the most trouble with, acting wise (probably to determine a studio placement) and then the top 2 studios i would want to be in. and it was over! quick and painless, about 10 minutes! the anticipation is much much worse... i was shaking before i had to go in there, it is alot of pressure but they make you feel very at ease esp. bc its one on one. i got in the atlantic theatre company and im already kind of overwhelmed w/everything! All comments i have heard from current/former tisch students have been very very positive. and theres no better place to study this! Well, you are welcome and I hope everything turns out very well for you!

Also, I've a lot about big classes at NYU. For anyone there, how big are the theatre classes for majors? Also, how big are the classes at gallatin?

Sorry to bother you again Akr031, but how much theater experience did you have before auditioning for NYU, I'm wondering if you need to have done professional theater and stuff before hand in order to have a chance at getting it. Anyone else's imput is welcome of course.

I didnt do so awesome on the SATs, i got a 1320 but i got a 30 on the ACTs (which i thought were a hell of a lot easier). I did about 14 or so school plays (my hs had about 7-8 shows a yr which was A LOT!!!) and a couple of community shows. But I think that theyre more impressed by your audition, and that can tell them more than the longest resume ever could. So I am here now and Goddard is the dorm to be in- Im in a corner room overlooking washington sq park its absolutely beautiful! the area is the best and the people are so nice and welcoming. i am very happy, even though its only my 2nd day here :)
