I really think Sony VAIO Z1RA is awesome! Very very light and thin! it's acually much below $3000. It's like $1399.
Dell's Inspiron 600m is again so light and thin and I'm actually planning to buy it.
Dell's latitudes are very light and thin.
Whatever you do, I'd definately recommend buying one of these. They're all below 3000.

Wait. First reason: sometimes computer companies offer discounts to college students. Second reason: computers are always being outdated and the prices are always falling.

Dell has a new line of super thin laptops. So do Apple, but I prefer and I'm guessing you want a PC too. Skinny is nice, but remember you sacrfice power.

Maybe you'll want to consider a tablet PC -- they are only about 3lbs and have some really nice features. I'd look at one of the convertibles like the new ACER C110 series, or the one from Motion Computing. The newer ones are much more powerful than the first generation tablets, and also better built.

If you wouldn't mind a Mac, I have an iBook which I absolutely adore. It isn't "superlight" by technical standards, but I have no trouble carrying it around (and I'm a whopping 5'1"/90lbs). Depending on the speed/features you need, they are fairly cheap as well.
