going to bates next year. terrified of having a roomate who either uses all of my stuff without asking, is my total opposite (in a bad way), decides to draw a line in chalk across the center of the room to prohibit me from making contact with her, or some other awful scenario. Am i paranoid or do other people have these scary, scary thoughts about roomates?

I have a freshman single...hehe. I was so paranoid about having a nightmare roomate, and now I'm SO relieved!

My daughter has had a single since freshman year. She is also a mentor to a new freshman student who tells her she has a single room in Anna Mann with a fireplace!( they also have hardwood floors and bay windows)

But about roommates I would contact your roommate before hand, they are probably just as worried about you , as you are about them!

see, i don't know if I would want a single, and I don't know if Bates even has that as an option. The thing that worries me is that one of their frosh dorm arrangements is called a quad (2 bunkbeds side-by-side in a large room). To me, that is absolutely absurd. No one should have to get to know and learn to live with three strangers all at once (I mean, this is NOT summer camp). oh well...

Meh...my parents won't let me get a single because they think I won't have a social life.

most schools that i have visited actually have a day about mid semester entirely devoted to room mate swapping (sounds horrible!).
Calimari, at Bates, i believe they have a very rigorous roomate match system, where you answer various questions concerning sleep cycles, cleanliness, what kind of music you absolutely cannot stand, etc. Therefore roomates are based on some sort of personal compatibility, not just some random lot. The Bates dorms are so nice compared to some of the schools around here!

oh I believe anna mann is at Reed, right?

yes anna mann is at Reed and I wouldn't worry about having a single room
You will have a social life, unless you never come out of your room.
