Curious.... How many credits are usually required in the freshman year?

Freshman typically take anywhere from 14 to 17 hours a semester or 28 to 34 the first year. Many schools will not offically classify you as a sophomore until you have completed 30.

For schools on the quarter system (Stanford, Caltech, others), it's different. Figure around 15 credits per quarter, 45 for the year.

Thats right schools here a full time class is 5 credits, if on financial aid they require 18 credits a quarter, so you end up taking 2 or 3 credit class just to make finaid happy.

My daughters school has semesters and each class is equivalent to 6 credits of a quarter class. she is required to take at least 3 or 4 credits, which is same as 18 to 24 credits in a quarter system.
Then again some schools have trimesters , or 4-1-4 year.
They use the middle term for study abroad or lighter classes, also saves money on heat as it seems the midwest schools do this ;-)

Thanx all... I got another question....
I am doing IB and IB counts for credits in some schools right? So if I get a high score (say 6 or 7) in a Higher Level subject then I earn credits before I go to college... Now my Math teacher told me that earning credits this way is equal to getting scholarships or paying less... since studying in collegess you pay for the credits.... Is this true? I thought earning credits only allows me to jump study and not paying less or something like that....
Thanx for helping...

I believe what your teacher is referring to is that your IB's can result in your getting college credits -- such as 8 hours in calculus. At the college level that becomes 8 hours of credit that you never have to pay for, and allows you to complete all college requirements (like a 120 hours total needed for graduation) with less total college hours that you do pay for. Thus, the IB credit saves you money.
