When you are a freshman, you probably won't be doing research; however, summer after freshman year is a good time to start. Internships are difficult, though not impossible, to get. If you don't manage to get an internship, see if you can stay on campus and do research through your professors. Most of them employ undergrads in some capacity or another... basically, cheap labour. Just ask one of them if a) they have some positions open, and if not, b) which professors to ask. Once you have some research like that on your resume, getting an internship is easier. Career services will help you out; there are also internship fairs and such on campus. When in doubt, ask professors who often know of companies or have relationships with them.
