How good are they in general? I know that they're Division I, but since they're non-scholarship how good are they really?

Pretty bad to say the least....the Harvard vs. Yale game every year at least gets a mention in the daily sports recap...

Ivy league football is Division I-AA. The best conferences are Division I-A.

"Pretty bad to say the least"??? Don't listen to that idiot. Bottom line, Ivy League sports are very entertaining to watch. Are you watching future NFL Hall of Famers? Probably not. (although Jay Fiedler, QB for Dartmouth a few years back, is doing alright on the Dolphins) However, there are still great rivalries between schools such as Penn and Princeton and Harvard and Yale which draw big crowds. And although the games may not garner national spotlight, it's all about supporting your school and kicking Princeton's ass. And just for the record, Penn went 7-0 last year in the Ivy League. That's pretty damn good if you ask me.

Is Chris Dudley the best ever basketball player coming out of Yale?
I know Eric Johnson, the tight end of San Francisco 49ers, was a wide receiver at Yale. He was a 7th round pick by Bill Walsh, and it's an absolute steal. Eric Johnson is one of the best TE in the NFL.

Ivy NFLers

Yale
Eric Johnson, TE, 49ers
Chris Heterington, FB, Rams last year, i think the Raiders just signed him
Dick Jauron, Bears head coach

Harvard
Matt Birk, Center, and he is a multiple time PRO BOWLER
Marv Levy, former Bills head coach

Penn
Jim Finn, FB, Colts
Jeff Hatch, Guard, NY Giants

Cornell
Seth Payne, DT, Texans

Dartmouth
Jay Fiedler, QB, Dolphins

Columbia
Marcellus Wiley, DE, Chargers, another multiple time PRO BOWLER

so there are some good Ivy leaguers in the NFL.

P.S. I did that all of the top of my head. I'm sort of a football nut (GO 49ers, Ken Dorsey is a steal!)

Oh I forgot, Princeton and Brown both suck and have no players, but ESPN's Chris Berman is a Brown alum! Berman in my opinion is the best sportscaster out there, especially his zany nicknames, like 'Judast' Priest Holmes (forgive me father, for I have sinned on a Sunday, LOL) and Chris Fuamatuma'afala, cuz he's a BAD ma'afala! (Shut yo' mouth!) If you've ever watched NFL Primetime, you'll think this is hilarious, if not, u'll have no idea what the hell i'm talkin bout.

For the record, Berman's best nickname (although its for baseball): Edgar 'Trailers for sail or' Rentoria. LOL

Well done, Austin Powers. I'm a major football nut myself, but I don't think I could have pulled off that Ivy League list off the top of my head. I had no idea Marv Levy went to Harvard. I always thought of him as the "horse's ass". Where are you going to college? And speaking of Chris Berman, two of my favorite nicknames are Mike "Miami" Tice and John "I'm not a" Kruk. Classic stuff. Personally though, the Chris Fuamatu M'atafala is my favorite.

btw Ken Dorsey was NOT a steal for multiple reasons, which I won't get into right now. The best QB steal in the draft was Kliff Klingsbury drafted by MY New England Patriots. Sure he won't get much playing time behind Brady, but that's still a hella lot more time than Dorsey's gonna get behind Jeff Garcia. They'd bring back Elvis Grbac and Jim Druckenmiller before they let Dorsey play. I hear Grbac's available

Marv Levy was a terrible college football coach. I mean TERRIBLE. He used to say "punting is the most beautiful thing in football" and have Cal punt on 3rd down every single time, not just punt on 3rd down for fakes, but every time.

The Ivy League is second tier football.

By Nocalguy (Nocalguy) on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 03:55 pm: Edit

Ivy League football is not worth watching if you don't attend the school.

By Lethalfang (Lethalfang) on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 04:10 pm: Edit

Good schools in major conferences with quality football programs:
Stanford, Cal (UC Berkeley), UCLA, Michigan, Northwestern, Illinois - UC, Notre Dame (really good football teams), Virginia, UT - Austin.

By Nocalguy (Nocalguy) on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 04:43 pm: Edit

Disagree about Cal. They had a decent year this past year, but only won 1 game the year before. At least they play in a big-time conference.

I do not have any bias against Ivy League schools (I will be attending Cornell). But watching Ivy League football when you don't have any connection to the schools is like watching the XFL or the WNBA. Inferior talent.

cal - recruiting violation. tsk tsk.

stanford's new coach is either going to step up this year or take a beating from many angry students over his performance last year.

By Lethalfang (Lethalfang) on Thursday, May 01, 2003 - 06:37 pm: Edit

The previous coach Tom Holmoe was fired after posting 3-8, 5-6, 4-7, 3-8, and 1-10, then Jeff Tedford took over. He didn't have any new players on the team and posted a 7-5 record. Did you follow the NFL draft this year? Everyone is raving about Jeff Tedford! Cal is gonna be good.
Stanford's coach Buddy Teevans won't step it up. He sucks just like Cal's ex-coach Tom Holmoe. He will be fired after this season.
