I am working on my NMSQT Semifinalist essay and am wondering what the general consensus is on how to interpret the "around 500 words" guideline. My first draft was about 615 words, which I was already a little uneasy with. After having my English teacher and counselor look over it and recommend changes, I am coming out with nearly 670 words. However, in 10-point Times New Roman, I am fairly sure it will still fit into the space provided. I think I have the language about perfected and just the right amount of detail, but I don't want to do something stupid that could disqualify me from continuing in the competition.
Submit as-is, or back to the drawing board?

I did 667 words and it fits in the space at size 11. I figured that as long as it fit, it was okay.
