Working on the Semifinalist essay... is it ok to use contractions? Should I go for a more personal style or more formal? It IS autobiographical... oh, and please let me know if you're speaking from a position of experience (i.e. college app. reviewer or something) so I know how much weight to give your answer!

I am a semifinalist also working on my essay, and I am taking a middle-of the road approach between personal and formal. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to use contractions; in fact, you have very limited space, so using them helps.
