I'm thinking if you apply Early Decision to a place like NYU, then they'll expect you to be able to afford it, since you're stuck going there under contract.
But I could be wrong. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable about this will reply.

If you need financial aid, you should not apply ED anywhere. Even if the college is need blind, they are very likely to give you an inadequate package (especially if it looks like your family has a high income on paper). With ED, you are stuck with that package.
Applying early action is fine - they will give you a fin aid package, just like with regular decision, but you have the choice to wait to get packages from other schools, compare, bargain and decide
I'm pretty sure they give you your financial aid package after they process the FAFSA form, in February or so. So when you apply early, you find out whether you got in in December, but the financial aid stuff still comes later.
Hope this helps
