hi, ive been playing bassoon for quite a while, and throughout that time, everyone always told me that one day i'd get some bassoon scholarship or that bassoonists were in high demand. but none of that really happened yet. so im just wondering, what are some bassoon scholarships that are out there and how can i apply for them? thanks

I haven't heard of "bassoon scholarships" but that doesn't mean there aren't any. Many folks do mention that if you plan to play the bassoon in college SOME schools will offer you merit aid even if you aren't a music major. Also it might be a desirable extra for a small college who NEEDS a bassoon player in their ensembles (as you know there aren't as many bassoon players as flutes). The best thing to do is mention this to adcoms when you visit....or contact the music department directly to hear about their options. DD is doing this with the oboe, and she is getting mixed reviews. Some schools simply do NOT award aid for music endeavors to non-majors. Others are asking her to audition for merit aid as a non-major. Regardless...any merit aid given to you will be based on your proficiency. Simply playing the bassoon won't suffice....you'll need to be good, and probably audition. So....ask!!
