I have been accepted to UC Berkeley, but will not be able to afford four years of out of state tuition. Does anyone know if there is a way to become a california resident after living in california for only one year? (I've heard that I need to be financially independent for two years before I can claim residency.) Anybody have any previous experience or knowledge on this manner? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i moved to california about 2 years ago, and attended community college very shortly after i came here. The community college required that i show proof (a drivers lic, or utility bills) that i had been living in this state for a year. Also, if your parents claim you on their taxes, you cannot become a resident of the state, you need to claim yourself because the school usually wants a copy of your last years taxes to prove residency also (at least they did in my case). I hope this helps.

If one of your parents lives in CA and claimed you as a resident you can get a tuition exemption if they fill out a form and provide proof - that's what I'm doing for UCSD.

I have been going to college in Boston and want to take a college class over the summer in California. I've lived in California all my life, except of course these last 8-9months when I was going to school here in Boston. Does anyone know if my CA residency has been expired? I did not have to file taxes this year and don't have a drivers license, but I am a registered voter in California. Will the California collegeg I am attending over the summer still likely to charge me for being a non-resident? Does anyone know?
