I'm a current student at UC Davis.
Does anyone know how the work/study program works? I heard you get 1/3 off tuition costs.

When you fill out for FAFSA for next year , you must include that you are interested in work - study . Work - Study is handed out along with the other financial aid .
Work-Study generally consists of 10 - 15 hours of work and they pay you weekly . Unless it's a State School , I hardly think it will be enough to take 1/3 off your tuition BUT it doesn't add to your student income on the FAFSA application so that's a bonus .

Thanx for your input. Just a few more questions:
Is it a special program because it doesn't add to the FAFSA? If I'm not elligible for FAFSA, is it the same as just finding a normal job? Also, can I join it when the school year starts? Thanx.

Work Study is a work program that is part of financial aid need based packages awarded to students. The difference between "normal jobs" and work study is that the funding for work study is different. Also these jobs are on campus jobs that are specifically slated for work study recipients. If you don't file the FAFSA and don't qualify for need based aid, you very likely will also not qualify for work study. However, you might be able to find an on campus job that would generate income. The difference here is that work study is considered a finaid award and is not counted as income on the FAFSA (I believe it DOES count as income for tax purposes). A regular job is considered income and does need to be reported on your FAFSA.
