Sometimes I'll be filling out an online form (ie at the college board site, or princeton review, or other scholarship search sites) and it will ask a question such as "Are you a National Merit Finalist?" The choices are only yes or no, with no choice for "not known yet." I hate to type in "no" because I'm almost certain that I will be, but since I'm a junior, I haven't been told of my status yet. Same holds true for questions about membership in Nat'l Honor Society--I hate to say no, but my school selects members in their senior year. Is it ok to say yes to these kinds of questions when I know that I will be in the future?

You are not one at the moment you are filling the application out. You would be lying if you said you were a national merit finalist.

So do you think people who read this info interpret a "no" to mean "not yet, or not yet known"? I think it makes me look pretty bad if they think I am saying that I didn't even make it into honor society, especially since a lot of schools, I believe, do initiate students prior to Sr year. I can't help it that my school selects only seniors (in the spring, no less), long after I will have sent colleges info about myself. There needs to be a category for "expect to be in the future."
