cal poly has its yearly tuition at just under 4000 a year for both in state and out of state, but it then says there is an additional charge 'per unit' or something like that for out of staters.... can anyone clarify?

It is the same thing that politicians do when they vote to raise "fees" but refuse to call them "taxes." Whether you call it "tuition," an "additional charge," or a "fee," the impact is the same and it is just "tuition" by another name and if charged "per unit" that means there is a set charge per credit hour that you take. As Cal Poly is on the quarter system (and you usually attend three of those quarters per year with summer the fourth), the typical student will take 10 to 12 credit hours per quarter.

careful - a minimum of 12 units is required to be a "full-time" student and financial aid may be affected, if someone is not a "full-time" registered student.
