I've been checking the mailbox everyday, but nothing yet. I'm really counting on this one.

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 08:41 pm: Edit

Curious did you send in this years or last years tax return? We didnt have this years done and it said use most recent so we used last years.

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 09:30 am: Edit

I am wondering if we all missed out as its so late in May...
hope not.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 05:53 pm: Edit

i hope not either...STILL havent heard anything--ARG. but you would think someone on this board would have won it and posted if they did!

By Stormky (Stormky) on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 07:35 pm: Edit

Yeah I'm worried thats the case too. I wonder if there's anyone we can contact to ask?

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Friday, May 28, 2004 - 01:14 pm: Edit

I called today and they said letters are going out next week..and they had not notified winners yet! So theres hope!

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Friday, May 28, 2004 - 05:17 pm: Edit

NEXT WEEK!?!? what are they doing to us!? well at least there is still hope :-)

By Tassadar129 (Tassadar129) on Tuesday, June 01, 2004 - 07:00 pm: Edit

i got a letter today saying i was not one of the winners.

I live in Houston, TX

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Tuesday, June 01, 2004 - 07:52 pm: Edit

oh I am sorry Tassadar, I hope you have better luck with another scholarship. We still havent heard ..

We just got word last week that D. won another $500 from a local club. This Sat they are having a dinner in her honor.

The nice thing is they are going to give cash so she can use it for books or stuff for her dorm. I am thrilled. It may not be alot but it sure helps!

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Wednesday, June 02, 2004 - 01:58 am: Edit

Oh then we should be getting the rest of our notifications soon.

sorry about the bad news tassadar.

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Wednesday, June 02, 2004 - 07:02 am: Edit

Your note made me check online and I noticed the Walmart list of winners is up for employees..but not the other one..
this made me check the Amvets list and we did not win.
They had 6 winners and 300 applicants. That one was a TON of work for nothing.
The local ones are the way to go for a better chance.
Walmart is offering 2 per store I think..so thats not too bad.

By Dawgdncer (Dawgdncer) on Wednesday, June 02, 2004 - 11:25 pm: Edit

It's strange, the paperwork says "non-winners" will be notified in June and winners in May.... Still nothing in my mailbox. BTW, has anyone received anything from Target?

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Thursday, June 03, 2004 - 02:27 am: Edit

What paperwork? Nothing i find online indicates that. And i dont know that person called so im relying more on that because scholarship notification "deadlines" seem to be more like "guidelines." and if by target you mean mervyn's i havent heard anything from them either.

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Thursday, June 03, 2004 - 07:21 am: Edit

When I called the number on the Walmart application (LAST WEEK) the woman said winners and nonwinners would be sent a letter NEXT WEEK..meaning this week. At the time of my call neither winners nor losers had been notified according to her.(I specifically asked if winners had been notified as they were supposed to be by the end of May - she said no the letters had not been sent). So my guess is they are being notified now and winners and losers will hear very soon as one person already did.

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Thursday, June 03, 2004 - 07:31 am: Edit

The Walmart scholarship was kinda odd...for one thing our application had two places for D. to sign..one right below the other (a typo?) For another it said to check ONLY 1 category of community service..so what if you did more than one type..and lastly it asked for tax returns..most recent - but the deadline was early Feb and many people dont have taxes done that quickly..so I just hope we did it right.

By Iska (Iska) on Thursday, June 03, 2004 - 10:17 am: Edit

Angstridden, how about substituting "non-winners" for "losers?"

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Thursday, June 03, 2004 - 03:28 pm: Edit

yes i know the application was very odd in that respect. i was like umm one type of service? i wouldnt worry about the tax returns, we turned in the previous years because it wasnt even possible for our tax returns to be done (my mom works for private contractors and they dont even send the tax forms to her until the end of march).

so lets just all keep our fingers crossed!! cause there was nothing in the mail today :-(

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Friday, June 04, 2004 - 03:50 pm: Edit

Ok we heard we lost today..boo hoo..

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Friday, June 04, 2004 - 06:10 pm: Edit

sorry about that angstridden...but you won that 500 dollar local one so be happy about that!!

i still have yet to hear. i just want to know at this point!

By Libroschico (Libroschico) on Friday, June 04, 2004 - 06:41 pm: Edit

okay, so has anyone actually found out that they WON the scholarship yet?

Also, when were the notifications postmarked and from what location?

Still nothing here. . . trying to figure out if that is "good" or "bad."

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Friday, June 04, 2004 - 10:48 pm: Edit

We won $2,000 so far..and it was a ton of work.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 03:42 am: Edit

still nothing in the mail today :-(

libro i believe it will be postmarked from MN, where scholarship america is located.

Angstridden, it is extremely hard to win scholarships!! people told me over and over again how i was a good student, it would be easy blah blah and i have found that is not the case! So far i have won about 3300, and it has taken a LOT of work.

Many scholarships were biased. for example i applied for this 2,000 one at my local hospital for people entering the health field. Out of 36 applicants 6 were chosen. This was only from like three schools. I know that there could not have been six people with better credentials than me (not to sound snotty or anything) in the running. Turns out the scholarship was really just a farce designed to give to their volunteers. couldnt they have just kept it that way in the first place? and not announced it to the public? was a waste of time for me!

It seems like the local ones were the best ones for me! (1,500 from my elks lodge, 500 from my school, 1,000 from a diff hospital, and 300 from my distict) Everything is just so competitive and almost luck of the draw!

By Goneinfivemin (Goneinfivemin) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 09:46 am: Edit

I find it strange that I have won local scholarships and even some national scholarships, but anything awarded through Scholarship America I have not gotten. I know it is the luck of the draw, but it is getting really weird. Even the local volunteer scholarships offered through them...and I am a two time national volunteer winner. Strange...but at this point it no longer matters. Stanford's stupid FA department is keeping my money...when my family could really use it.

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 10:12 pm: Edit

Well I hate to say this but Walmart does not ask for SAT..they ask for GPA so how can you beat a 4.65 GPA which my D. has and TONS of volunteer service..esp. since its per STORE and I understand the store only had 7 applicants...and they dont ask for essays..
something is not right.
but heck thats the way it goes huh.

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 10:13 pm: Edit

It would seem many here should win that scholarship..they take 2 per store.

By Libroschico (Libroschico) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 11:09 pm: Edit

Yes, the Wal-Mart application did ask for SAT/ACT scores -- these were in the counselor section. I distinctly remember laughing that only three boxes were given for the SAT composite since I would imagine most applicants would use four digits.

Not to be mean spirited, but I doubt that a 4.xx GPA would have been a deciding factor. These are impossible to compare between different high schools (variances in strength of curriculum) and the unweighted GPA was most likely used instead for equating purposes. Of course, whether or not this is proper could be (and has been) debated ad infinitum, but most scholarship committees have neither the experience nor the time to evaluate the strength of classes on a transcript even if they were able to discern that information.

As for how final selection is actually made, though, is anyone's guess...

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Monday, June 07, 2004 - 10:04 am: Edit

I dont recall a counselor section on the wallmart scholarship..but I do on the Papa Johns one.

I could be wrong though.

I thought the scholarship app was screwy..ours had two places to sign your name at the end. And some other stuff.

By Libroschico (Libroschico) on Monday, June 07, 2004 - 01:32 pm: Edit

Ok, update on the scholarship:

Upon checking the mail this morning and AGAIN finding nothing about the scholarship, I called Scholarship America. They said that they no longer administered the scholarship and instructed me to call the Wal-Mart Foundation.

When I called the Wal-Mart Foundation, the lady looked up my name & the store I applied at and was able to tell me that I DID win the scholarship. When I told her that I had not been notified by mail, she instructed me to call another scholarship management service.

SMS (I believe it was called) said that the notification letters were being mailed out on a rolling basis starting with the non-winners. She did say that they had 70,000 applicants to notify and that it would still be a few weeks yet for all of the letters to go out.

She also said that they had not even started on the winners notifications yet -- so this might be good news for all those that haven't heard. My advice would be to call the Wal-Mart Foundation at 1-800-530-9925 and they should be able to definitively tell you if you've won or not.

Good luck to all that haven't heard!

By Angstridden (Angstridden) on Monday, June 07, 2004 - 03:15 pm: Edit

Congrats LIBRO!!!

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Monday, June 07, 2004 - 04:01 pm: Edit

I WON!!!

Thank you so much for giving me this information. i almost died on the phone while she was like oh hold on while i look up your information.

I REALLY needed this money so im very excited!

Libro you are my new best friend for the day! and congratulations on winning also!

By Dawgdncer (Dawgdncer) on Tuesday, June 08, 2004 - 10:49 am: Edit

I took your advice and called. They were very nice and let me know I'd been selected for the scholarship too! I was feeling so good about Wal-Mart, I called Scholarship America to ask about the Target scholarship. They were not nice! Told me that if I hadn't heard from them I didn't get it and quickly hung up. Wow, it seems to me that if Target pays this organization to manage their program, they do a pretty bad job of it. How hard is it to send a "thanks but no thanks" form letter. After all, I went to some effort to put together the application and so did my counselor.

By Stormky (Stormky) on Wednesday, June 16, 2004 - 02:25 pm: Edit

I just got a letter today saying I was awarded the Higher Reach Scholarship for $2,000.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Thursday, June 17, 2004 - 03:13 am: Edit

Has anything received anything in the mail yet for the Walmart scholarship? Seems like its been a long time...

By Mindrna (Mindrna) on Thursday, July 01, 2004 - 11:09 am: Edit

those bastards lost my app...

By Flamom04 (Flamom04) on Thursday, July 01, 2004 - 07:09 pm: Edit

I called the foundation phone number listed above two weeks ago and they informed me that my daughter had won. We have yet to receive anything in the mail regarding this scholarship... guess we'll just have to wait.

By Dawgdncer (Dawgdncer) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 09:40 am: Edit

I received my letter in yesterday's mail. It mentioned the local scholarship and didn't say anything regarding the state or national level.

By Desrtswimer (Desrtswimer) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 04:03 pm: Edit

I received my letter in today's mail. Like Dawgdncer it didnt say anything about the state or national level. Wonder if that has even been decided?

By Rushzeeman (Rushzeeman) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 06:56 pm: Edit

So I was getting the mail today and I got this letter from a scholarship foundation in Tennessee. I open it up and behold I too am a winner of the Sam Walton Scholarship. Totally forgot about it since it was due back in March or something. Well I really have to say that it brightened up my day though! :)

But in regards to the State and National Level, I also received another piece of paper that asked for a bunch of information for a publicity release and stuff like that. I think that once we turn this paper in to our local Wal Mart store, they then enter us into the state drawing... not too sure about this but I am pretty sure that they have not decided on state or national winners yet.

By Iska (Iska) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 08:26 pm: Edit

Got the $1,000 thing. Brightened my day. I struck out on a lot of scholarship stuff. It was nice to be surprised by a "forgotten" scholarship.

By Ako86 (Ako86) on Friday, July 02, 2004 - 09:07 pm: Edit

I still haven't heard anything from Wal-Mart... :(

By Ako86 (Ako86) on Friday, July 09, 2004 - 03:20 pm: Edit

Well, I finally called the Walmart Foundation number someone else posted up there. The girl was extremely friendly and informed me that I had won both the store and the state scholarships, and that I might not have received anything yet because I was a state winner and they are still mailing out notices. So for anyone who hasn't yet been notified, definitely give them a call as there might be very good news.

Finally got notification in the mail today...good thing it got here, as I only have two days to get the acceptance info in. Talk about slow...
