I'm 23 years old, took a year off college and want to get back in-thinking pre-med. What do I have to do to be considered independent? My parents have not claimed me on their tax reports for years but I still live with them. Thanks

Usually you have to be at least 24, and you can't have lived with or received any support from your parents for the past 4 years. I just went through that whole mess myself.

i turned 24 on the 12th of january, 2003, and I have lived on my own since i was 18. when i fill out my financial aid they want my parents income but i have not been able to contact my mother for over 3 years. my school's fao is telling me either i have to prove they are dead, in jail or abused me to be considered independant. is there any other way around this

Karmen, by financial aid do you mean the fafsa or the school's own paperwork<

both, i dont have any w2's or ss# to submit for either parent and the schools basis for a dependacy override is what i stated above

i think that since you turned 24 in january, they are going to make you submit parent's info, since you were 23 for the last financial year. the only way i got around it is because i'm 28.
