I plan to attend an Ivy for college next year. Right now, I'm applying to as many merit/need based scholarships as possible!
But...I heard that scholarships are virtually useless because for the amount you win, the school takes away from their financial aid & grants for you?? Any comments/validation on this?
If schools are going to decrease their aid for me according to the amount of scholarship money I win, then am I just wasting my time, or is there a way to truly help the costly situation??
Thanks in advance.

Each school treats this differently. Some schools will take away aid based on outside scholarships. Some will take away half your aid and some will not take away anything. Sometimes, if they take away anything it might be a loan portion or a work study position. So you need to check with the FA departments at the schools where you apply.
My son has a merit scholarship at his school and the school assures me it will never be decreased no matter what other scholarships he receives. So, it probably is not a waste of your time and energy.

No, as Shennie said: sometimes you can just put it toward your contribution, or it only reduces their aid by half of each scholarship.
