i was talking to a friend about this and he received something in the mail about being chosen for the national honor roll. He said they based it on academic achievement. I've never heard of this award, but if it's legit I'll look into it. Is this a prestigous award or a sham?

its free by the way

Of no value. Organization puts you on its National Honor Roll and then tries to get you to buy its publication showing that. Practically anyone who has ever been on any honor roll in school is a candidate for solicitation.

Greetings all:

Let me share with you what I know about the National Honor Roll. The National Honor Roll is a scam organization. Don't fall into their trap. They are targeting high school students all across the nation. My daughter recently received notification. Don't be fooled. Their letterhead is fancy, and they even claim to be located at a prestigious Pennsylvania Avenue address in Washington, DC. The address they use is 2020 Pennsylvania Avenue. However, that is the address for Mail Boxes Etc. If you have any doubts, go to the Mail Boxes, Etc. web site at http://www.mbe.com/ and click on the icon "locate a store globally." The icon is in the upper right hand corner of their web page. I have contacted the Mail Boxes, Etc. store in Washington, DC. Here is the full address and telephone number: 2020 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington, DC 20006-1811 - USA, phone (202) 457-8166. I know for a fact that they rent out a mailbox to National Honor Roll. I have the advantage of working in Washington, DC, so it is easy for me to follow up on a false Washington, DC address. The Mail Boxes, Etc. store is located about 3 blocks from the Farragut West metro stop. This is one of the metro stops that is close to the White House. National Honor Roll claims to be in Suite 8000. There isn't a Suite number at 2020 Pennsylvania Avenue. The number 8000 stands for the mailbox number for National Honor Roll. A courier picks up mail from this mailbox. It could be a different courier every day.

The phone number for "National Honor Roll" is (202)737-0715. It re-routes callers to a New York
telephone number. The address in New York is 300
Merrick Road, Suite 206, Lynbrook, NY 11563. The phone number is 516-593-0555. This is the same address for Student Marketing Group. The state of New York filed a petition against Student Marketing Group on July 8, 2002. Please see the .pdf file at http://ww.epic.org/privacy/student/smgpetition.pdf Student Marketing Group collects information on students and sells lists. Unsuspecting teachers pass out information to students. The students do not know their personal information is being fed back to National Honor Roll and Student Marketing Group. You see, the teachers are also being sucked into this scam.

One of our local news stations did a brief segment on "National Honor Roll" recently. It wasn't pretty. Please visit the Better Business Bureau web site at http://www.dc.bbb.org/report.html?compid=W8000570&national=Y to see the Better Business Bureau Report.

The bottom line is that National Honor Roll is a vanity press. A vanity press means anyone can publish anything for a fee. Colleges throw away stuff sent to them from the National Honor Roll because it is considered unsolicited junk. They claim your name and profile can be published free in the book, but why would you want them to do this? You do not want to have your personal information on the streets. Call them right away and have your name taken off their list. And while you are at it, ask them why they are scamming the American people.

The people in Lynbrook, New York will tell you that their Headquarters is in Washington, DC. If you ask them anything about the "Headquarters" they will tell you, "well, it is really our processing center." I have talked with Jane, Wendy and Linda in the Lynbrook, NY office. They are all very evasive about the organization. They won't tell you anything about the courier who they hire to pick up the mail. When they get tired of you asking legitimate quesitons, they will transfer you to the voice mail of Lynn Romeo. Of course, Lynn Romeo doesn't return your calls. Does she exist?

Let's stop these people.

Every educator, librarian, parent, congressman,
journalist and anybody else who cares about the safety of our nation's children should be concerned. Please forward this information to everyone you know.

I encourage all to file a mail fraud complaint against the National Honor Roll. Postal Inspectors base mail fraud investigations on the number, substance and pattern of complaints received from the public. Here is the URL to the Postal Inspector's web page https://www.usps.com/postalinspectors/fraud/welcome.htm In the lower left-hand portion of the screen is the link to 'File a Mail Fraud Complaint'

I don't get it. If they are not asking for money then what do they want? my mom got the letter and she never gets fooled by anything. And this fooled her. I don't believe it. why?

By Ajgawlik (Ajgawlik) on Monday, December 29, 2003 - 06:53 pm: Edit

My parents received a letter from National Honor Roll too, they are also wondering if this is a scam? I would also like to know what the previous person asked too. I'm a senior in high school and in the process of choosing a college to commit to.

By Shhh (Shhh) on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 - 06:46 pm: Edit

Lkir, I wish all parents were as smart as you. My mom is an idiot when it comes to this type of stuff. When she got the National Honor Roll thing in the mail she made a big deal out of it and said she would waste the hard earned money (and at the level we are at, we definately should not be spending it on stupid things like this) whatever it may cost to buy whatever the national honor roll thingy says. I think they want you to buy a book or something, or charge you for your picture, I dont know. I told her it was a scam and she yells at me, if we were not in the US she would beat me. Someone should start an organization ANTI FRAUD and mail letters to parents every week about the current frauds of things like this and of the media in general. GRR

I got a letter from National Honor Roll in Lynbrook, NY. Is this the same one?

By Shauna (Shauna) on Monday, January 12, 2004 - 11:24 pm: Edit

Lkirkla--

Are you sure you're not thinking of another organization: The National Society of High School Scholars (or something along those lines)?

I'm part of the National Honor Roll and I've never paid for anything I didn't want to (my mom bought a patch, that's about it).

By Punchy (Punchy) on Tuesday, January 13, 2004 - 06:44 am: Edit

this is how you know its a scam, ask around at school to see who else got the national honor roll, then you will see how much it takes to actually get into the national honor roll

i wouldn't put these "acheivements" on your college app. as they will make you look like a schmuck

By Lkirkla (Lkirkla) on Tuesday, January 13, 2004 - 09:59 pm: Edit

Dre2387: What do they want? They want your information. National Honor Roll shares the same address as Student Marketing Group. Student Marketing Group collects information on middle and high school students and sells lists. Even if you don't send National Honor Roll any money, they are still making money off of your information. These are the same people who sell your information to credit card companies when you are in college. They encourage debt during the college years.

Ajgawlik: Yes. This is a scam.

Shhh: Sorry to hear about your predicament. Have your mother contact me. I'll fill her in on this scam organization.

Peasinapod: National Honor Roll is in Lynbrook, New York. However, the mail box at 2020 Pennsylvania Avenue is at Mail Boxes, Etc. in Washington, DC. Same people. They claim the 2020 Pennsylvania Avenue address is their headquarters. If this is the case, they must have tiny little trolls working in that
mailbox.

Shauna: I have researched National Honor Roll. You are correct. You do not have to pay for anything. However, your mother bought a patch.
You sent them money for that patch. Because National Honor Roll is operating out of a mailbox, I can guesstimate correctly that they are not paying taxes to the District of Columbia. Very clever, isn't it? Also very criminal. National Honor Roll does not have a license to operate as a corporation or a non-profit in the District of Columbia.

Punchy: I agree with you. Students should not put National Honor Roll on College applications.

To all: Please be advised, the National Honor Society has a warning against National Honor Roll on their web site. Here is the URL:
http://www.nhs.us/notice_misled.cfm

Thank you SO much!! I also got a letter for this but stupidly I turned in the application without checking first. They just sent me another letter asking if I wanted to buy something but I didn't send it in yet. So I guess the $1000 scholorship is also fake, right? Too bad..

how about other organizations? i got this one and whos who among american high school students and one from the nobel family (forget the name but it cost $45 to join! i didn't spend my money on it)
how do we know whats legit?

By 24hourmom (24hourmom) on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 10:42 am: Edit

My son just got the letter yesterday. My son is really smart and I was like cool. But now my daughter is a grade ahead of him, she didn't get one of these letters last year, she is really smart too. I am not sure what to think, now days there is so many scams. But I know my daughter and son will do good with or with out this honor roll. This just lets us see anyone is a target of a scam. SO BE VERY CAREFUL.

By Magda (Magda) on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 10:01 pm: Edit

Hi all! I think this website is very interesting because take for instance my mom...she though that this was a cool thing and she has no idea that it's a scam. It certainly sounds and looks real. I haven't paid for anything but what should I do with the College Notification thing? Did anyone here use that service and it does cost like 7.50 to use? Well, thanks for the help!

By Magda (Magda) on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 10:12 pm: Edit

One more thing... the scholarship that is offered to those that are admitted onto this honor roll... is it real? Or is it not worth anything except one's time?!

By Nlkrueger (Nlkrueger) on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 11:14 pm: Edit

Heehee, I was talking to a friend at school, and he was saying, "Man! I got into the National Honor Roll even though I failed a class! Maybe they won't notice it! I'll probably get kicked off though..."
I didn't have the heart to tell him that it's a scam...

By Lkirkla (Lkirkla) on Saturday, January 31, 2004 - 11:28 am: Edit

Greetings all: I just learned something new about National Honor Roll. How do they get students' personal information? Well, they share the same office and survey information with Student Marketing Group in Lynbrook, New York. But, there is a third element involved in this scheme. Student Marketing Group gets their information from Educational Research Center of America, Inc., otherwise known as ERCA. ERCA is the organization that sends the surveys to teachers all across America. Teachers pass these surveys out to their students. Of course, students think these are "safe" surveys because the teachers are passing them out. Teachers collect the surveys and place them in postage-paid envelopes. They mail them back to 2020 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Room 7799, Washington, DC 20006. Hmmmmmmmmmmm! Does this address sound familiar? Yes! It is the same address as National Honor Roll at the Mail Boxes, Etc. on the George Washington University campus. In this case, the 7799 is not a room. It is ERCA's mailbox number. ERCA claims their phone number is (202) 393-7799. The (202) is a Washington, DC area code. E-mail address is info@studentresearch.org I haven't tried the phone number or the e-mail, but I can guess that phone number re-routes callers to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Please see the Federal Trade Commission report involving Student Marketing Group and Educational Research Center of America at http://www.ftc.gov/os/2003/01/ercaconsent.htm
Happy reading! By the way, National Honor Roll claims they give away scholarships. Does anyone know if these scholarships exist? Who receives these scholarships? Does Lynn Romeo, the publisher of National Honor Roll, give these scholarships to her nieces? nephews? herself? Please advise.

By Chimmortal (Chimmortal) on Saturday, January 31, 2004 - 11:32 am: Edit

My sister received a scholarship from Who's Who a couple years ago. I think it was for either $500 or $1000. So that one at least isn't a total scam.

By Magda (Magda) on Saturday, January 31, 2004 - 03:58 pm: Edit

Hi. I was wondering what the scholarship is that comes along with those who make it onto the national honor roll...Do the recepients actually receive money if they apply and qualify for one? I would really like to know so thank you!

I don't understand why you guys keep calling this a scam. They are NOT lying about anything. First of all, you dont even have to pay. Second, they're not telling you that this achievement will get you into college or anything. they just say they'll put your name in some catalog, etc, etc, and what they say, they do. It's as simple as that. It seems that some people are so self-centered that they are willing to buy stuff that says they're name on it and shows an award or whatever.
Im sorry, but it is simply the people's choice, no one is forcing them to do anything. Whats different about the grammys or golden globes awards? They're all worthless, but hey, humanity likes praise, it seems they're even gonna pay for it in the case of NHRoll

By Blackfire59600 (Blackfire59600) on Sunday, February 08, 2004 - 09:01 pm: Edit

As a fact I know that the National Society of High School Scholars is not a scam. One of my best friends will be traveling to Washington D.C. to receive a $1000 scholarship from them in front of Congress in early May. Also, NSHSS is paying for his plane tickets and hotel room while there, so I doubt that a scam would go to such trouble.

By Blee731 (Blee731) on Wednesday, February 11, 2004 - 07:21 pm: Edit

I never said it was a scam, but it's pretty worthless. With the exception of a very few, most don't benefit from the National Honor Roll, Who's Who, and whatever other similar garbage there is. Of course they have to give away SOME money to look good. Where do you think that money comes from? You guessed it-all the profits from selling books full of students' pictures and biographies, lol. In any event, just don't put it on your resume.

By Lkirkla (Lkirkla) on Thursday, February 12, 2004 - 08:22 am: Edit

They also get their money from selling lists. In collusion with Student Marketing Group and ERCA, they sell your personal information on the streets. They are going to try to make a profit off of you one way or another. And yes, this is a scam. Running a business out of a Mail Boxes, Etc. is something that should be taken seriously. National Honor Roll does not have a license to do business as a corporation or a not for profit in the District of Columbia. By the way, check out their web site. National Honor Roll has removed their contact information. Why would they do that?

By Lkirkla (Lkirkla) on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 - 03:04 pm: Edit

A friend of mine who works in a small public library in Georgia e-mailed me the following example from the National Honor Roll "commemorative yearbook":
GRIFFIS, DIANNA: JESUP, GA: WAYNE COUNTY HIGH (SR): Duke TS: Hi Hnr Roll; Pres Ac Ftns Aw; Sci Fairs; 4-H; Chrch Yth Grp; DARE; Emplmnt; Key Club; SADD; Bnd; Dnce; Flg Crps; Mch Bnd; CO Captain of Flag Corp; Captain of Flag Corp; Local Rep for Georgia Music; Talent Search; Public Relations; Georgia South University.
Pictures are published at less than an inch tall. The width is about a half inch.
This is what you pay $50+ for? Get real!

My friend was all excited when her daughter was invited to be in the National Honor Roll. She equates it to National Honor Society. I didn't have the heart to tell her it was a scam. She bought it hook, line and sinker. Her daughter is average at best. Nice kid; just not outstanding academically. Oh well. It made her happy. So, at least the scam made her day.

I got that National Honor Roll thing too. And as a fool like i am i filled it out, but luckily i haven't sent it yet. Good thing too cuz i would've been sucked into their scam as well. I thought it wuz for real but i guess i wuz wrong. Sorry if y'all can't exactly read this but it's how i type. I'm a sophomore right now and i thought the scholarship would help so i filled it out. Then i check online and find this website. Man wuz i wrong! I don't think ill be send the form anymore. Also for all of you who say you didn't have the heart to tell those who got it, well you have to. If you're a friend then why are you going to let them fall into the scam? Some friend! Why make them spend money for all this and you knowing you didn't do anything! Now you're just as wrong as they are. You make a decision too even by doing nothing, and the decision to not tell them is just wrong. Y'all should tell anyone and everyone you know no matter what. Don't let people fall into a scam. You're just giving in to them. You guys do want to set up all these anti-groups things yet some of y'all just don't say anything to others who you know. And you know it's a scam yet you let them fall into the trap. You're just helping them! It makes no sense. If there's no one who'll fall for their trap, then there would be no National Honor Roll rite? Then tell everyone! Also I got this letter from the Global Young Leaders Conference, but it's a whole lot of money. Do y'all know if it's legit or not? I don't want to try and set up all this fundraising and stuff and then find out it's not worth anything. it seems ok so far, but then agen i'm not sending anything yet. Only a sophomore. I'll get other chances.

what the hell are you guys blaberin about?! i signed up with the national honor roll and hadnt paid a penny... i've been with the National Honor Roll for a little over a year now. Shauna seems to understand what i mean, it doesnt cost a thing, and ive been getting plenty of free college magazines that are really helping me with picking out a college i want.
i know i didnt sign up for this mag, it's called "Private Colleges & Universities" the only way they could possibly known my address and strengths in school is through the National Honor Roll. also, i know my school didnt just start sending me this stuff cause right now my grades have dropped pass a 2.0 GPA.
also, universities are sending me brosures and shnat about their campuses, i asked around at school and no one else seems to be getting the same kind of treatment im gettin. well... we'll see what happens.

Greetings all: It is that time of year again. National Honor Roll will be scamming the fresh faces of middle and high school students from all over the country. They are still using mailbox #8000 at 2020 Pennsylvania Avenue. Mail Boxes Etc. must be really proud to have National Honor Roll as one of their clients.
