I live in New Jersey and I was thinking about applying to University of Michigan. My family's financial status is horrible so financial aid is a big issue. The thing that really gets to me is that I've heard that it is very hard to recieve financial aid from state schools that are in another state than which you live in. Is this true? Also, what are some other options? Thanks for the help!

You should research some of the U web sites. You will find that some are seeking geographic diversity and will offer financial aid to students from selected states, usually merit based. You need to look beyond U. Mich, however.
So start looking. There's no magic to this stuff. You gotta just do the work and start surfing.

UMich does have a merit scholarship that's aimed at out-of-state students. It's very selective, and you have to have need, too. I think it's called Rogel, or something like that.
My son has been invited to apply for it, but I doubt we'll qualify for need. You may, so you should check it out.
