Well, you guys (and I know there are a few other international students out there) – how are you paying for college?
Are you going to apply for financial aid? (Most schools reject international students if you do.)
Or are you rich?
Or....?
I’m really curious, so it would be cool if you replied.

I am admitted to Interior design graduate at Human Ecology, without any funding.
I am solely hoping on the 2nd year's possibility for RA / TA.
till then, It's with an empty bank balance back home and some awful amount of loan as well
Cant figure out how other international students are managing..
Can anyone tell what are the chances of getting funds for the 2nd year of graduate studies ( in Cornell as compared to other Univs?)
curious.

By Hunter (Hunter) on Monday, July 21, 2003 - 09:41 am: Edit
Well, I'm an Australian citizen now (although I lived in the states till I was 10, but sometimes life just sucks like that)..... and I don't know how I'm going to pay. I guess just relying on financial aid... but most colleges don't want to give international students financial aid at all. Eh, I can't blame 'em....

what exactly constitutes someone as being international... are u INT if u have lived n the US for years but are not a citizen yet...(will be soon)???

another international student here...hoping for aid as well..T.T if all goes wrong there's always the bank to help you out...they've told me that interest rates are pretty generous to students trying to pay their tuition..

Becks777 and Hunter, have your families applied for Green Cards yet?
And, yeah, Becks777 is right... if you have a visa that is B, F, H, J, or M, you're considered to be an international student.
By Becks777 (Becks777) on Monday, July 28, 2003 - 09:06 pm: Edit
Yes i have applied for green card
hey, Does having an EAD and a social security no help in any ways?
By Loser1982 (Loser1982) on Monday, July 28, 2003 - 09:45 pm: Edit
Do you have an Approval Notice from the INS (now known as BCIS) for your green card?
Having an EAD and SSN made them declassify me as international. But not from out of state to instate... I guess it depends on your school, but if you show you've applied for a green card, they shouldn't classify you as international.
By Becks777 (Becks777) on Monday, July 28, 2003 - 10:06 pm: Edit
Does that mean i can get financial aid....
What college are u in?
Tell me more about yourself man..where r u from..wat schools did u aply to...how much u paid for college..your international status..and all
Thnaks for the info

The following colleges are need blind for international students:
Harvard College, MA
MIT, MA
Princeton University, NJ
Williams College, MA
Yale College, CT
These schools only admit students on the basis of merit, and pledge to give full financial aid. All other schools take an international student's ability to pay in account.
Good luck!

are u sure about this? i have ssn and EAD and applied for green card by file I-485, get a notice of action (not notice of approval), i think i need to wait for three yrs to get my green card. Before that, i am classified as international, that is how all the admission officers tell me.

I'm counting on fin aid from the colleges... I know it's highly unlikely but I think I'll have to try anyway. Yale is my top choice becaue it's need-blind for international students as well.

in simple terms spyware....wats notice of action and approval..so are u paying full tution..wat college is it?

Hi,
Another int'l student here. I am a freshman in college now and I have a scholarship... Pretty tough still but I am working to pay off the rest. Scholarships are availabe, just not 100% but there're many opportunities to make up the differences.
Good luck!

By Jjane45 (Jjane45) on Monday, October 20, 2003 - 12:57 pm: Edit
Yes some private colleges do give financial aid packages to int'l students too, but exclude them from the more generous ones even they qualify...

Actually, only the good schools give scholarships to int students. They look for talent and are willing to pay for them. Of course it's not easy but you gotta give it a shot. Like Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Amherst, Wellesley, Hamilton...oh I can't remember all. Anyway if you just go on these schools'websites and click on admission, it's bound to give you information on financial aid of all kinds. Just be patient and look around.

Hi, i'm an international student from Chile!, my name is Paulina. does anyone know a school that gives financial aid and that is located in Califoria??
By Nyj_Gary (Nyj_Gary) on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 10:15 am: Edit
hey i'm an international student from singapore. i think most competitive universities/colleges do offer some financial aid to international students, just that there are limited places for grabs which means applying for finaid will hurt your chances of getting in. except at the need-blind institutions like harvard, yale, princeton, MIT, williams and middlebury. (but i really doubt whether they r truly need-blind... do they really have separate admission officers handling admission and finaid?). i know of other schools like Bates, Colby, Grinell and many others (mostly LACs though) which provide substantial aid... for more information go to http://highered.cois.org/Resources/FinancialAid.htm and download the excel file. hope this helps.
By Becks777 (Becks777) on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 10:28 am: Edit
i m prety sure the top ivies do, but what about the top publics.............michigan/la/ berkeley
and what about those people who are already residing in the US with thier family?....shouldnt they be awarded some financial aid??...rather thatn those who r going to come to the US for studying??
By Nyj_Gary (Nyj_Gary) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 08:57 am: Edit
according to what i have researched, none of the public schools - not even the top ones like UCs or Michigan - offer financial aid, as in need-based aid. but my bet is that some of them do offer some form of merit aid. (for example virginia's jefferson scholarship) but bear in mind these aids, esp those that cover full tuition/board ones, are extremely competitive because of the limited no. of places available. anw i am not very sure with merit aid either coz i haven been researching on them... maybe u shd juz check out the college's admission site~
regarding the US citizenship issue i ain't v sure since i am a 'pure international' haha... think i read abt this topic somewhere in this forum though, but can't rem where exactly!
By Becks777 (Becks777) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 05:40 pm: Edit
Thats exaclt the problem with me and several other people here. We are not "pure internationals". Our families have been living here for years but dont have a green card. And remember, one job change results in a restart of the green card process.
It actually makes sense to not give financial aid to intenationals. If they dont have the money to pay for the tuition, then why r they coming abroad then??........but they atleats have the option of studying in thier own country in case they r not admittied or its too expensive, but people like me dont!
By Nyj_Gary (Nyj_Gary) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 03:11 am: Edit
haha, itx this thing called diversity dat's working in the favour of us 'pure internationals'. i understand ur predicament... but what to do? anw may i noe how r ur stats like?

Most U.S. colleges have limited merit scholarships for international students but no need-based financial aid. At NYU for example, you need to be a U.S. citizen to be eligible for need-based aid and the number of merit based scholarships are very few. You must also be able to provide financial statements as proof that you are able to afford to pay the school's fees.
