Does anybody know when the Robert C. Byrd scholarship committee notifies applicants? Has anybody recieved anything from them yet? The reason I ask is that some scholarships only notify winners and I just wanted to know if I should still be waiting for that result.
By Obmud01 (Obmud01) on Sunday, May 04, 2003 - 01:06 am: Edit
Deadline to submit application is May 5, 2003 and winners will be selected in June 2003. All high schools can submit up to 2 candidates. Normally they select seniors having highest GPA and SAT I scores. You get notified either way -- win or lose...
By Medusa2003 (Medusa2003) on Sunday, May 04, 2003 - 09:11 am: Edit
I think that the procedure may vary by state. In Missouri the deadline was April 15th, selection is based on GPA and ACT scores, there was no limit on the number of candidates per high school, and the state office that administers the scholarship said that it might be August or September before winners are selected. They also said that the amount is not yet determined although it has per $1,500 per year for the last few years.

I did a websearch on the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship and it looks like the requirements that Obmud01 mentioned are the California deadlines and procedures.

I did a websearch too for NY State and the deadline was in March (also no notification date posted). Good to know I still have a chance. Thanks for the help.

Is everyone still waiting? I have heard these are sometimes announced at graduations, but no one we know in TX has heard anything yet. Just checking...
By Medusa2003 (Medusa2003) on Thursday, May 22, 2003 - 08:48 pm: Edit
No word yet in Missouri. I would think I would have a good chance since Missouri bases the decision solely on ACT (35) and GPA (3.95 unweighted, 4.2 weighted, top 3% of class).

Good luck!

I've recieved no notification in NY State either.

When did students get notified in previous years? What were your stats?

My son received his award letter Friday, 5/30 - Texas. Just in time for graduation. Good luck to everyone.

got my award notification last week. New York.
By Laxgirl04 (Laxgirl04) on Monday, June 02, 2003 - 12:03 am: Edit
what is this =) clue me in
By Lhomme (Lhomme) on Tuesday, June 03, 2003 - 07:17 am: Edit
Laxgirl: The Byrd Scholarship is a merit scholarship you can apply for senior year. Each state awards a certain amount of these scholarships based on an altered GPA and standard SAT, ACT score.
On another note, if I'm still waiting in NY does that mean I didn't get it?
By Momof2 (Momof2) on Tuesday, June 03, 2003 - 09:35 am: Edit
In Texas, each high school can nominate 1-2 students - you can't apply for it otherwise. Our school received a letter indicating which, if any, student was awarded the scholarship. You might check with your school office.
By Outtaluck (Outtaluck) on Tuesday, June 03, 2003 - 09:50 pm: Edit
each high school can only nominate 1-2 students? why so few? what happens if you attend a school where everyone has high stats? the average gpa for my class of around 200 is 1450+...
By Lhomme (Lhomme) on Wednesday, June 04, 2003 - 06:35 am: Edit
That may just be Texas. In my school, they calculated the Byrd GPA of all the seniors and let all those who met the qualifications to apply (was around 50 or so). The number of winners also varies by region. In Manhatten, where I'm competing, there were 29 winners in 2001 whereas other NY counties only had 1 or 2.
By Outtaluck (Outtaluck) on Wednesday, June 04, 2003 - 12:30 pm: Edit
what is the gpa cutoff? is the gpa weighted or unweighted? all of my courses for the past two semesters have all been college level courses.
By Lhomme (Lhomme) on Wednesday, June 04, 2003 - 07:48 pm: Edit
The Byrd scholarship calculates your average by taking your top 3 scores of the 5 areas (science, math, english, social studies, foreign languages). The minimum GPA is 95 and the minimum SAT is 1250.

We received notification that my son was not chosen for the Byrd Scholarship in PA. In Pennsylvania the qualified applicants are included in a RANDOM selection process. In the letter they said they received 2820 apps and 290 student were randomly selected from the 2820...frustrating!!!(Valedictorian with nothing below an A for four years)
By Lhomme (Lhomme) on Saturday, June 14, 2003 - 09:58 am: Edit
I'm still waiting on recieving notification and my school claims not to have recieved anything! Maybe they're trying to conceal the winners until graduation? (For me its 6/23) Has that been the case for the others who have been notified?
By Medusa2003 (Medusa2003) on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 07:40 am: Edit
Every state notifies students at different times in addition to having different selection procedures. I would suggest contacting the agency in your state that administers the Byrd scholarship. The phone number and/or address should have been including with the application information. If you don't have it try entering "Robert C. Byrd Scholarship 'Name of your state'" in a search engine. We were told by Missouri that the announcement wouldn't be made until late July or August.

what if you never took the sat.. could you use your act score
By Medusa2003 (Medusa2003) on Monday, July 14, 2003 - 07:23 pm: Edit
Depends on your state. Missouri considers only the ACT.

Finally got notification - letter dated 8/8/2003 - from state of Missouri saying that I was awarded a Byrd for the 2003-2004 school year.
By Plastikcup (Plastikcup) on Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 10:47 am: Edit
So, how much was your award?
By Momof2 (Momof2) on Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 10:48 am: Edit
Congratulations to you!
If possible, you might want to fax a copy to your new school's finaid office. They would probably appreciate it before the last minute rush of enrollment and it might save you some headaches. Again - congrats!
By Medusa2003 (Medusa2003) on Thursday, August 14, 2003 - 06:14 pm: Edit
$1,500 per year for four years (assuming the government approves continued funding in future years). I mailed the form to the fin aid office but faxing sounds like a good idea.
By Marthpodi (Marthpodi) on Saturday, August 16, 2003 - 02:55 pm: Edit
how does this scholarship work? I got it in FL but am going to school out-of-state - do I still get the award?
By Medusa2003 (Medusa2003) on Sunday, August 17, 2003 - 12:48 pm: Edit
Congratulations Marthpodi. The Robert C. Byrd scholarship can be used be at any four year accredited institution of higher learning in the U.S., checks are mailed directly to your school. I am also going out-of-state.
The Robert C. Byrd Scholarship is not a "bright flight" type of scholarship that can only be used in-state.

Do I need to do anything? I got the letter a couple days ago, but I have misplaced it. Is there anything I need to do - or is everything automatic? I don't see how'd they'd know which school to send it to if I didn't fill out a form of some sort.
Can someone tell me what to do please?! I'm clueless.

Didn't you fill out your school when you applied for the scholarship? Err misplacing it is bad. I think there's the contact information if you want to change the school... try search for it online =P
By Momof2 (Momof2) on Monday, August 18, 2003 - 10:50 am: Edit
The notification letter we got in May needed to be returned with the college's financial aid office address filled in. We also made a copy and sent it directly to the college just to cover all the bases. If you really can't find it - go back to your high school office as soon as possible. I believe they should have received a duplicate or at least some correspondence with the Byrd contact info. on it. Good luck!

Do you have to be a senior in MA to be eligible for the Byrd scholarship? Or can juniors apply to?
By Medusa2003 (Medusa2003) on Sunday, September 07, 2003 - 12:59 am: Edit
It is my understanding that applicants in all states must be entering college in the fall.

I'm a student at MIT and I've been getting the Robert C. Byrd Scholarship from California for the past couple years. My parents just recently moved to a different state. Does anyone know if my eligibility to continue receiving the scholarship ends when I submit a change of address with MIT?

From a web site:
"The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program is a federally funded, State-administered program to recognize exceptionally able high school seniors who show promise of continued excellence in postsecondary education. [34 CFR Part 654, Subpart A, Section 654.1]"
So, this program could vary from state to state. Contact your state dept of education with questions?

I heard that this scholarship was only for use in New York State schools. Is there a primary level competition in NY? All for all you New Yorkers, my guidance counselor told me I was nominated in late November.

How does the money reach us? It's nearly my second term in the first year of college, and I haven't heard from them since September (or maybe it was October). I don't get much info from calling the HESC number or from visiting their website...

Anyone know anything about Illinois and the Byrd scholarship (s)?
Thanks.
