crybaby,
i hope you're aware of the fact that 50% of Harvard acceptees score right in between 1400-1590, which means 25% of the people score a 1600 and 25% score below that. The lower slot is reserved for URMs. And of course the atheletes.
How low is your score? You might be able to see now that low for a normal college like a 1350 is almost suicide for Harvard.

I'm sorry, this may sound studpid, but what does URM stand for?

Under-Represented Minority

the lower quartile is generally comprised of athletes, under-represented minorities, internationals. you're gonna have some seriously tough luck at harvard unless you have something totally outstanding like math olympiad or intel competetion. just my honest opinion.

I moved here 9th grade and hope to get around 1400 on the SAT this saturday. Is that good for harvard.

Selcouth1, can I just ask why you say the lower quartile is for athletes, URMs and internationals? As in, why internationals? Coz I'm an international and I got a 1490 and I don't really want to take it again, but I'm a little worried about a 1490 when there seem to be so many American students with 1550-1600 applying. Thanks

lower quarter SATs are for URMs because colleges are generally more lenient toward URMs.
lower quarter SATs are for athletes because athletes bring publicity to the school and bring old alumni out to the games (which leads to large cash donations).
lower quarter SATs are for internationals because colleges don't expect internationals to have amazing verbal scores.
1490 is good in general, and really good if english was not your first language.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I just can't believe a college would reject an applicant that they would otherwise admit on the basis of a 50 point difference in SAT scores. Last year, I was, to put it lightly, ridiculously and obscenely obsessed with the golden '1600'. I got a 1530 on my first try. In retrospect, that should have been my first and only attempt, but, as I was clearly suffering from SAT-myopia, I re-took them as soon as I could. I scored a 1550 (800M/750V). That makes my best combined score a 1560.
I cannot possibly believe that an admissions officer would change his decision on the basis of 40 points (a difference of only one or two questions). I realize that a 1490 is slightly lower than a 1560, but I have to believe that such a gap is marginal at best.
Having completed my Harvard application (I'm applying early) I realize now that my SAT score is only a very small part of who I am as an applicant. Personally, I think my academic classes, extracurricular activities, and, simply, passions far outweigh a three-hour examination.
But of course this is only my opinion.
Cheers
-Kevin

i'm not exactly an international applicant but i moved to the u.s in the middle of 9th grade! i'm taking the SAT tomorrow and hoping for the best...but i have serious nervousness issues...messed me up last time...anyway..
on a side note: i thought being an immigrant would help me a little because i don't have as many ecs as many of the other applicants do...but after reading this board i'm beginning to doubt that...there are tooo many other ea foreign applicants who have all these great ecs...how did you guys get a chance to do all that?...didn't it take you some time to settle down and stuff...i was soooo overwhelmed with everything when i first came here..!!!
