By Atownstomp (Atownstomp) on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 01:31 am: Edit

forgive the double post, this appears in yale forum as well.
i would like to major in political science and will apply early to one of the above schools. here are my stats:
32 ACT(retake in october)-36R 34E 29S 28M
3.98 gpa, ranked 8/323
will take both APs my school offers, will have taken full advantage of honors, etc.
Activities:
National Honor Society President
Eagle Scout
Student Council Secretery
Model Legislature- senate majority leader, hopefully governor this year
Varsity Football, Marching band, church service
Awards:
National Merit Scholar SF
Harvard Prize Book
some leadership scholarships
recs, essays will be good but won't make me look like God.
white male from MN, fin. aid not a factor
Questions, Concerns:
Yale would be my first choice but you gotta hate that acceptance rate.
Here are my scenarios:
1. I apply to Yale EA. what are my chances?
2. Brown ED. what are my chances?
3. after being rejected from Yale EA, I apply to Brown RD. chances at Brown RD?

thanks everyone

I think Brown RD is equivalent to Yale EA - I'm not sure. But for one thing, Brown is a lot harder in the RD round unlike Yale. You may be risking your chances at both schools by getting deferred/rejected at yale.

well last year wasn't yale brutal in the ea round?

yale ea: 30% accept, probably deffered

brown ed:60% accept

70% brown rd

What are you talking about? Brown typically accepts 25% of its ED pool--the third lowest early admission rate in the ivy league. Yale is actually slightly lower at 21%.

Brown typically accepts a bit less than 15% RD

To celebrian, don't post potentially misleading information.

To the original poster, don't get too hung up on the numbers because Brown admissions are unpredictable (we accept the largest range of SAT scores in the ivy league, for instance). If Yale is your first choice, apply there early to let them know how committed you are--that way you won't ever have to wonder whether or not you would have gotten in.

OP.

i know kids (white, some jewish) from minnesota at brown, harvard, and yale. some were amazing debaters, others had quirky talents on a national level. you have great ECs but they are DEFINITELY not "yale level" at this point. if you raise that 32, which is a pretty decent score, to a 35 or 36 i'd say you're in. you'll need an SAT 1550 to get into yale.

for brown, it's only slightly easier. i think a 32 would be close, but probably okay.

i seriously think you should evaluate your chances at both schools and decide if it's worth it to throw away your early shot at yale. remember, i know three kids at yale from MN and ALL had 1550+/val/other amazing stats. kids at brown were also amazing, but because brown is less numbers focused, i think you'd be fine.

good luck in whatever you decide. you should definitely apply to brown RD if yale does/doesn't work out, you never know if you'll chance your preferences later on!

Who knows if they have a better shot? Numerical distinctions on a standardized test will not determine nor should antecdotes. Whereever you feel that you will be more comfortable living, learning and having fun at for the next four years -- apply there. It is in my view flawed to assume that one is easier than the other. They look for different things.

my point was only that brown looks for certain students personality wise, so while academically she's fine, i also believe she's the kind of student she's looking for, so i posted what i thought her chances would be, not the actual acceptance rates
