College Discussion Forums: Ivy League Schools: Harvard University: Towns around harvard- ADMISSIONS QUESTION
By Fushia183 (Fushia183) on Friday, September 24, 2004 - 07:06 pm: Edit

how much does it help to live in a town surrounding cambridge (public school) in terms of admissions? does it give an edge or is it like having a legacy/being a urm or anything like that?

does harvard usually feel that it should accept student(s) from a surrounding school just because of its location?

thanks!

I was reading an article in the Boston Globe about your question. Harvard does give preference to 4 or 5 schools in the area of Boston in terms of admissions. They put those candidates in a special pool and pick the best ones from them. For example, Boston-Latin is a magnate school in Boston which usually sends around 20 kids to Harvard every year.

do you know any other of these schools (or were they not mentioned). i know that they give cambridge R&L special consideration, however, what about the surrounding towns of cambridge.

like: lexington, arlington, belmont, winchester, woburn, malden, medford, somerville, etc?

it helps a lot - harvard takes tons of locals every year

so they will consider an applicant from a surrounding town much more favorably (specifically in Early Action)?

as long as the student is well qualified, do they usually try to take at least one student from each public school (such as lexington, arlington, belmont, etc.)?

any more info would be greatly appreciated.
