Is it true you get exactly the same kind of education at a state, pulic, or community school as you do in thee Ivy league? Dad says a diploma is a dimploma, go to prestigous grad school.

"same kind"? Eh, I'd probably beg to differ on that one because you'd get a different "kind" of education at each different school around the globe. It depends on what you're going for and what you're looking for. And I just ended sentence with a preposition. Oy vey. :)

Thast's exaclty my opinion I plan currently live in Miami. I plan to attend Columbia, but my father states I can get a just as good education in a state school, even though UF is a good school, visited it last year at debate competition, it doesn't have the urban atmosphere, opportunities, and diversity Columbia provides. It also doesn't have the unique fusing of opinions that there is in Columbia

If your "dad" says an advanced degree from HYPS etc. in combination with an undergraduate degree from a less prestigious school is worth more in life than JUST an undergraduate degree from such a prestigious school, he is probably right.

The first question would be, if prestigious schools due to their finaid policies aren't just as affordable for lower income families than state universities are (I don't know)

The second question is, if you are "just as likely" to get into one of the top grad schools from a not-so-top college. A recent analysis by the WSJ found some surprises with top LAC doing really well in that regard, beating the lower Ivies certainly, but only some state universities (like Michigan, Cali etc.) in the upper ranks.

But yes, if grad school is your goal, and an Ivy is burning up your monetary resources more quickly, your dad certainly has a point.

I live in Miami too. I would agree with your dad, but its all relative to just how much money is available. (UF would be a wonderful bargain with Florida Bright Futures.)

What school do you go to?
