How strict are they on the word limit? One of the essays I've written is about 640 words long, and I've been trying like anything to reduce the number of words, but I can't do it without compromising on the quality of the essay. If I put this essay in for the Harvard Supplement instead of for the Common App, will the word limit be more flexible? And also, just how bad is it to go over the word limit? I know if it's a below-average essay to begin with, going over the limit is driving the final nail into the coffin. But how bad would it be in the best case scenario, where the essay is actually good and interesting?

If your essay is good and interesting to Harvard adcom people then 640 wouldn't be a problem. I don't think they'll even notice that you went over the limit if it's interesting.
You're right, it is driving the last nail into the coffin if your essay is horrible and if it's long.
If you submit it for the supplement, do you have another essay for your common app thing?

Yes, I'll have another essay for the Common App. So I suppose it's pretty important that I keep under the word limit for the second essay then if my other is 640 words, yes?
