I'm a high school senior and I am absolutely in love with Brown. During my junior year, my grades slumped temporarily due to personal problems (mom got laid off, our unemployment benefits ran out, and there was a death in the family), but they rebounded significantly and I expect my grades to be really strong this semester as well. I know that the ED acceptance rate is much higher than that for RD, but would it be better for me to apply ED and show that I'm really committed to Brown, or go RD and allow for my second semester grades to give me a boost, even though I might be facing a tougher admissions review?

I'd say ED as they can defer you and you can show them how much you'd like to attend. If you explain your circumstances, I think they certainly will take them into account.
