Discus: Ivy League Schools: University of Pennsylvania: Yet another CAS vs. wharton question
By Nahbia (Nahbia) on Saturday, September 04, 2004 - 10:37 pm: Edit

I am very unsure about whether to apply to the college or to Wharton, and it's not because I'm trying to be a backdoor...

I've heard from many people that being a Econ. major is much more flexible in the types of job you can get after college, especially if you kind of follow a business curriculum (ex, taking accounting classes which isn't part of a econ major)...

Also, would an Econ major at CAS give more flexibility in my schedule to take 2 foreign languages, plus dilly-dally (haha) in taking more arts-focused courses such as piano? How strict is the Wharton curriculum? I can't get a good feel for it because I don't really know what a college environment is like.

I just feel like the CAS would give me more freedom to explore other things while I could take some classes from Wharton. I know a lot of you will say, apply to Wharton if you love business and you're sure you want to go into it. I *AM* sure I want to go into business, but I just want to graduate from college with a more well-rounded background without such a core focus in pure business.

Thanks for any advice!!

it seems like CAS is the fit for you. Wharton is a little bit more prestigious, but go there only if you want to study business. You have so much options in the CAS unlike wharton.

But I am interested in business after college...since business is so cutthroat, would Wharton give me a significant advantage?

And I'm afraid of being categorized as backdoor because I would apply as an Econ major, etc...
