Post your stats if you are at least pretty sure you're applying to Harvard EA. I'm aware that there's another thread, but it was created so long ago that I'm sure many posters have already changed their minds.

I want to see what I'm up against :). Good luck to all the applicants fighting for a chance at being in the Harvard class of '09.

SAT: 800M/760V; 800 IIC; 800 Writing; 770 Physics
GPA: 4.3/4.3 (Highest GPA in school's history)
Rank: 1/80ish
APs: Stats-5, US-5, Calc BC-5 (Skipped to the AB class, then studied BC on my own)

Senior schedule:
AP English
AP Micro/macroeconomics (if possible)
AP European History
Japanese 5

School accelerated me one year in both math and science.(I also self studied linear algebra and some of multivariable calculus over the summer)

Independent studies in math/science:
-Multivariable Calc
-Differential/Partial Differential Equations
-(pending) Real/Complex Analysis

-Quantum Mechanics (PDEs included :-p)

I will be taking all of these classes by myself (as I don't think any student at my school has ever gone past AP calc or AP Physics).

Additionally, I will be working with my physics teacher and the physics department at the University of Maryland to develop a macroscopic visualization of quantum processes. My intent is to enter into a local fair with the hopes of being invited to ISEF.

ECS

Throughout my entire high school career I have always wanted more science/math extracurricular activities, as my school offers next to none. Consequently, I have been on a crusade to provide such opportunities:

-Founder/president/coach of school's math club (which will be participating in competitions like the Harvard-MIT and Johns Hopkins math contests).
-Next year will be opening a chapter of 'Mu Alpha Theta' at my school to give the club some national distinciton

-Starting a FSEA club (Future Scientists and Engineers of America) this coming year (at the request of the headmaster and science department)

-Spearheading a teaching assistant/tutoring program for my school's AP calculus courses (I will teach a session once a week)

Additionally:

-Co-founder of school's chess club (founded in 10th grade)
-Senior editor of school newspaper (member since 10th)
-Piano 12 years
-Art lessons 4 years
-Summer program for 2 years, 8 hours a day, for 5 weeks each year. We bring intercity students to our school for math and english classes in the morning and then a general summer camp in the afternoon. (Other community service: ushering, soup kitchens, habitat for humanity)
-Independent research on a fuel-reducing compound
-Book club
-JV tennis
-Male lead in school's drama last year
-AIME qualifier last year (highest index in school)
-Lead school in the Math League
-Cum Laude Society
-National Japanese Honor Society
-Bausch and Lomb
-Renseleer Polytech Scholarship
-10th and 11th grade history awards
-St John's book award

I'm very anti-[post my crap online], but since this isn't a "what are my chances" thread, I'll go for it.

1430/740/730/700.
3rd as of June (that has changed for the better, I'm sure).
3._____ GPA. My school is on a 6 scale, don't ask me why, so I don't know what my current gpa is on a four scale.

Now I guess you wan't my activities/accolades:

Drum Mjr. of MArching Band
Lead Sax, jazz band
First chair sax, concert band.
Founding sax ensemble.
Reviews editor, newspaper. (soon to be EiC)
Literary editor, lit. mag. ( " " " " )
Member, Help Our Planet Earth
Member, Peer Leaders
Member, French and National Honor Societies

And all else:
* I attended the New Jersey Governor's School of the Arts, Creative Writing division. (Only twelve writers from the state chosen--woot!)

*I write for a nationally disseminated teen sexual health newsletter, Sex,Etc. Distributed in all 50 states, and, if I'm not mistaken, 7 countries. There are 30,000 unique hits to the website every day.

*As a result of my work with Sex, Etc.:
--I was interviewed on National Public Radio this summer
--I've been a guest speaker at various gym/health conferences
--I have written articles on Hazing, internet censorship, the J.Jackson superbowl extravaganza, NJ Governor McGreevey's resignation, and more.
--I've written, and am currently working on, articles for MTV.Com's Fight for your Rights Campaign

*Chosen to write an article for the Newark Star-Ledger.

*Best English Student award, four years running.

*I've worked in the offices of Rutger's University, doing summer work with Sex Etc. (This, now that I think about it, should be up there ^).

*I have taught Saxophone to a disabled elementary schooler in my town.

That should be about it. Throw NYLF (Medicine) in there somewhere.

Did I mention I'm black? Save the least pertinent info for last.

BAH! Gross.

Correction: wan't should be want.

Also,
I might send writing samples out. Not sure yet. I am submitting tons of work to different magazines so my status as a non-published author may change by November 1. I also applied to an uber-exclusive Teen Pregnancy Task Force that I'm hoping to become a part of. I'll know in september.

Anyway, enough about me. Good luck to all!

-Music Award (but that was only from my school)

- Cum Laude Society by my school with 6-7 other students in my grade... but my school doesn't rank so I'm not exactly sure where I stand... probably in the top 5 or 6, though I'm REALLY not willing to bet anything on that (my school is both tiny and extremely competitive).

- "Who's Who" of American Students book

-Acceptance Amherst's "Diversity Open House" in October (not sure if that counts/matters)

Also (though it isn't really my doing), my highschool is pretty well-respected with colleges, which I heard does give a little leverage? I think about 7% of our graduating class went to Harvard (though 10% were accepted, I believe) nearly all Early Decision/Action, and probably a third went to some kind of Ivy League or Stanford.

law asians are cool. what kind of law do you want to go into? i wanted to do information properties (copyright) law for a while.

oh you can see my stuff in my profile. i was on the other thread already

By Oliviakang (Oliviakang) on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 09:50 pm: Edit

mr. sanguine: yeah, my school is pretty hard core but it also helps that our classes are TINY (800 students from Pre-K to 12th) and when i say 7%, it literally is like 5 people. haha~

justice- apt name ;) I'm not completely sure as of yet; i interned at a law office this summer that did civil/corporate/criminal and so so far that's all i've been exposed too. the civil and corporate though are what's interesting (but oh-so-broad at the moment).... law asians *are* cool, aren't they? lol

justice-

daaaaammmnnnn... haha, you can probably guess that i saw your stuff in your profile ;) What does it take to be a National AP Scholar? (#-wise)... i've taken 6 so far and will have 10 by graduation but do you have to get all 5s or something?

By Justice (Justice) on Saturday, September 11, 2004 - 11:49 pm: Edit

olivia,

you need 8full-yr credits with an avg of 4.0 at least with at least 8 4s and 5s. So if you have a 3, then you need to have 9 full-yr credits.

hope to see you at harvard! you're very impressive too--and i think if you're top5 or 6 then you'll def. be in considering your school's standing with harvard.

see im thinkin that corporate information law is so hot right now. technology-based law is the wave of the future--there's so much going on with patent law and innovation these days that companies need to have smart people (supposedly a lot of those lawyers don't know what they're talking about) to fight for their developments. i think it'd be exciting to argue about that kind of stuff...i dunno i'm not nearly as interested in whether so-and-so is guilty or not. corporate law can change the way people do business or view information.

heh i've noticed that asians who are humanities-->law tend to be more attractive and outgoing than the med ones. i hope there are plenty of asian law kids at harvard as opposed to those hermiting biochem concentrators that i hear about...not that there's anything wrong with those...

By Just_Forget_Me (Just_Forget_Me) on Sunday, September 12, 2004 - 02:19 am: Edit

I'm 95% sure I'm Harvard EA. Not sure if it's the right decision, but, hey, it's EA, not ED, so I can make up my mind about the #1 later (and once I find out who will take me!).

Justice-We need some smart people doing patent law! Someone's got to shoot down the insanely frivolous lawsuits out their (SCO's linux claim, Amazon's "one click shopping", the company that patented the web link, etc.). Don't become a patent monger though!

As for my stats, a summary.

1600 SAT, 3x800 SAT II. 4.6 GPA (unofficial #1 in class).

AP (5s) - Calc AB, US Hist, Euro, Lang.
AP (this year)- Lit, Bio, Gov (US). I might take the BC and Comp Gov tests if I'm not completely senioritised out.

I took AB as an 8th grader, have done online calc classes since then. Might just take BC to 1. make sure i haven't forgotten stuff, and 2. make sure I at least get some math credit in college (I doubt Ohio State's online credit will transfer). Done fairly decent on AMC/AIME, but nothing anywhere close to USAMO

Football (3 year letterman). Student Council president this year, treasurer last year, class president the year before. Newspaper co-editor (something that's really competitive at my school). In the Know, co-captain 10-12 (represent for the nerd! It's a quiz bowl like team). And, uhh, Buckeye Boys' State? Student Rep to Board of Ed?

That's all that's interesting. There's some more stuff to fill up the slots on the app, but nothing that'll get me in/keep me out.

Cambridge is amazing. Harvard is incredible. Let's hope Dec. 15 is a good day.

BTW, anyone find the Oct. 15 deadline weird? I mean, it's more than enough time, but, still...

Justice-

so when you say "attractive", you actually mean in the physical sense? That's a hasty generalization... ;) Where are you from? It seems as though you're already familiar with a lot of the environment/people ... your web page made it seem as though you weren't going to college (though it might have and i just forgot).

I'm actually fine with or without a large (or larger) percentage of asians in the humanities area of things... I'm one of those that are afraid of getting pigeonholed into either the "studies all the time" or the "only hangs out with other asians" stereotype. Not that a little of both is a bad thing or that I don't have any cultural pride, I've just had some bad moments where Korean parents or elders have actually gotten upset at the fact that I don't have more Korean friends than any other kind of friends (if I did, that would be worth getting upset over since there is only one other korean in my grade) so I've gotten a bit tired of the whole "Let's make a big fuss about every choice you make in life and how being asian affects that choice" deal.

By Staticsoliloquy (Staticsoliloquy) on Monday, September 13, 2004 - 10:08 pm: Edit

my stats are not even worth mentioning. They're just numbers. Pretty horrible numbers too. Everyone has similiar scores and statisticc. Post things that will differentiate you from the crowd. The two things that will stand out in my application to Harvard are

National Institute of Health (NIH) research grant: one of three available for short-term research. Many postdocs have a hard time securing a grant.

Research Science Institute (RSI): those three beautiful letters. Both of my mentors were Harvard Medical Professors and they were leading researchers in their field.

oh, and the fact that my family income is 14K, and I'm on welfare, medicare, and housing. The horatio alger story. Everyone loves those.

By Justice (Justice) on Monday, September 13, 2004 - 10:34 pm: Edit

I just said it because I know (it's not just a stereotype) that at schools like Harvard and Yale, there are many biochem Asians that only hang out with their five other Asian friends and that's ALL they do. No joke. I dunno..I guess I'm being mean for criticizing their lifestyle but I personally feel that a lot of them have other aspirations and self-images that they want to pursue but just don't do it. Then again many are perfectly content, so that's great. Attractive wasn't the right word...something like friendly would've been better.

I understand what you mean by "not caring about how many Asians are also doing what I'm doing," but I have to say that I do believe that it is important to be with some people from the same race. Whether we like it or not, we have a dual identity--American and Asian, and like anything else, having people with similar identities going through the same things is just as important as having diversity of identity and journey.

I did Harvard SSP and I know a lot of students at Harvard.

Don't know a Brendan McGrail.

my 3rd time posting this but it does the job.
I'm a senior (Korean-American) in Maryland and am applying early action to Harvard. I'm interested in pre-medicine but plan to mark undecided on the application, because I think that it might hurt me to have my application compared to the other pre-med apps (just in case). My stats:

SAT 1: 1580 (verbal 780, math 800)
SAT 2: Biology 800, Korean 750, Math 2C 750-790 projected, Writing 750-800 projected
Unweighted GPA- 3.96/4.00
Weighted GPA- 4.6
Rank- Our school does not rank students, but I'm definitely in the top decile. Probably one of the top 2-3 kids in my class (of about 400-450)
AP scores- 3 AP Government, 3 AP World, 3 AP Language and Composition (I have serious handwriting issues, most certainly got 0 on the essays), 5 AP Biology.
My AP scores really aren't that hot and I plan to leave the secion for AP scores blank on my app. Does it make a difference? Aren't AP scores only used for placement and not admissions? My reasoning was that if I put my scores on the app with this in mind, they'd be bound to see it and although they're not supposed to take it into consideration, they might take bias of me or something.

I am currently attending our local public high school. I moved to the US from Korea in 8th grade, and plan to stress internationalism in my 1 required common app essay.
I expect to have one outstanding recommendation from my 9th grade biology teacher (whom I have been close with in my junior year), one not as awesome but still very good recommendation from my 11th grade AP bio teacher. I expect to have a plain good recommendation from my counselor, whom I hardly know. (We got new counselors this school year, I've only been assigned to my current counselor for a month.)

Given all of the above, what do you think my chances of getting into Harvard early action are? Will it all depend on my essays and recommendations, as I think it will? (I'm also applying early action to University of Maryland). If I am accepted to Harvard early action, I will definitely attend and will not apply to any other schools. If not, I will apply regular to Dartmouth, Princeton, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown.

Oh, and by the way, the Harvard Director of Admissions, Dr. David Evans, is coming to our school for a college visit on Wednesday 10/6. I plan to ask him some of the questions I just posed, like what they do with AP scores and such. (could i get an interview with him? LOL)

By Selcouth1 (Selcouth1) on Monday, October 04, 2004 - 03:37 pm: Edit

how does high school reputation/level affect ur chances? does going to a really good school make you look less outstanding, or better prepared? i come from a relatively poor school (both ways). 2000 students, 3 in the past 5 years have gone to an ivy, highest sat score last year was 1520, followed by a 1490 (not including me). wonder if it'll make me stand out or make me look crappy.

can i leave my ap scores blank? i thought it was just for placement putposes.. and it says on the app, they dont require official score notification until i (hopefully) enroll...

oh, and i dont have anything truly outstanding about me.. won't that hurt me? sorry so many questions

I know, it's not that great. But I used to live in Cambridge, and I've always wanted to go to Harvard. One of the teachers that I'm getting a recommendation from had a son who went to Harvard, so who knows?

Yeah, it can only be a good thing that not many people have posted here, right?

How many apply EA to Harvard each year?

I was worried that since I'm not one of those nationally-ranked chess players/ violin players/ debaters/ found a new calculus equation types, I really wouldn't have much of an edge for Harvard. But then i realized that there are what, only about a 1000 of those types of people? And how many apply to Harvard, half that? THERE IS HOPE!!!!

Justice-- you're majoring in physics? Theoretical or particle?? :) Just wondering, 'cause I intend to be a physics major as well...

What physics classes have you taken? Just curious.

Yet another question...

What are you guys putting for the Supplement space for non-academic honors or recognitions? Is that only for athletic, artistic, musical stuff etc.?
