Discus: Ivy League Schools: University of Pennsylvania: Clubs and orgs
By Philliesphan54 (Philliesphan54) on Monday, August 23, 2004 - 12:28 am: Edit

lets say im involved in a fraternity, have a part time job, and taking some hard classes, how much time is there to participate in clubs and orgs? do they require a lot of committment? on average, how many clubs or intr. sports does each student participate in? thanks in advance

It really varies depending on what activities you're talking about. For instance, alot of clubs only require a few hours time committment a month, whereas other clubs, such as fraternities, require several hours a week. Some jobs, like editor of the DP, entail alot of work and you'll prob be working two or three dozen hours a week. There's always alot of free time in college, but it's really up to you to decide how involved you want to be and how big of a committment you are willing to make to a club,

To simplify what Ryan said:

-if it's just something for fun and isn't very demanding, you're in the clear

-if it's something that's extremely demanding, like DP editor or UA council, and you're in the engineering program (or M&T) then, maybe not.

One Penn alumni I know from my fraternity (now a Special Forces US Ranger) played sprint football, was a DP writer, president of our fraternity, and made great grades as well in his latter years. I'm doing something similar (intr. soccer, vp of another club, vp of my fraternity) and I manage to keep above 3.5, so, yeah, it all boils down to how much energy and motivation you have.

My second semester freshman year:
- Pledged a fraternity
- Had a job where I maxed out my hours and earned over $3500
- Took a full course schedule, and I'm an engineering mind you
- Over 5 clubs with leadership positions in 4 of them

GPA: 3.6

It can be done. After your first semester you'll learn that time management skills are half the battle in college. Just don't burn yourself out.

Quick question: if you want to join a club sport (Badminton), what is the process? Do you need a specific athletic physical prior to coming?

Delta Tau Delta.

Knightmare: For club sports, I don't think you need a specific physical, but I would double check with the athletics dept just in case. In either case, whatever you need done you can do at Penn.

Regulus: That's cool, I take it you know Becky and Angelica then?

Yup. Are you moving in early for the NSO parties?

Yeah, most of the brothers will be moving in early. Our first party will be on the 4th. We just shelled out the big bucks on a new DJ booth, lights and speakers so I'm excited to see how it all comes together. Where is Sigma Nu located? Is it at 38th and Walnut next to us or am I getting you confused with a different frat?

By Slidems (Slidems) on Tuesday, August 24, 2004 - 09:23 am: Edit

Yeah Regulus we're literally right across the block from your fraternity. Funny eh?

Ahh okay, you're right at the corner across from College Buffet then. I know a Mike in Sigma Nu... smart guy, M&T, graduating in 3 years.
