Hey I have a few questions about Yale's crew team. I don't know if anyone who views this site regularly knows much about it, but I'll try my luck here first. I read in the 2005 Yale brochure that crew doesn't require previous rowing experience. If that's the case, is it really difficult to make the team during one's freshman year due to an excessive turnout at try-outs? Also, are there a varsity and junior-varsity teams? And finally, am I the right size to join the men's lightweight team: 5'7" 125 lbs? As always, thanks.

The recruited heavyweight coxswain told me that they recruit 8 rowers and look for about 8 "walk on" rowers out of the admitted freshmen.

I mean the thing they sent me with the application. The Yale "propaganda" material.

I'm an 08 recruit for the lwt team (there are 8 of us plus a cox). No, crew doesn't require any previous experience so walk-ons are welcomed. I'm pretty sure that they take as many walk-ons as sign up because many end up quiting due to the time commitment and hard work. Yes, there are varisty, jv, 3v, frosh, and 2nd frosh events. With you're stats, I would be tempted to be a cox... lwt is 155 avg for the boat but individuals can be 160... freshman is 5lbs less, each. Coxswains are 120 so you're closer to that.
Either way, join the team... of all my recruiting trips, the yale team was by far the closest and most fun. If you want more info, im me at roman86x.
