College Discussion Forums: Ivy League Schools: Brown University: Chances for an artist
By Ontolome (Ontolome) on Saturday, August 14, 2004 - 11:30 am: Edit

i'm only entering my junior year, but i've recently grown very interested in Brown and would greatly appreciate any tips or evaluations on your part.
I'm a caucasian female, and so far my grades have been only okay; i expect to finish with a 3.75 unweighted GPA (in all IB or AP classes)

anticipated SAT scores (estimates):
800 verbal
700 math
800 writing
(hope to place as a national merit semifinalist on the upcoming PSAT).

APs:
French 5
French literature 5
European Hist 5
I expect to get 5's (with the potential exception of a 4) in Bio, USHist, English, and Psych as well.

ECs:
pretty weak. i helped Janet Reno for a couple weeks this summer and last summer(interesting story).
Creative Writing Club
French Honor Society
IB Honor Society

Awards:
1st place Nationwide on French Exam
National Silver Key award for artwork, and hope to try for an American Visions this year, and possibly a Portfolio gold award in senior year although it will be too late to list on the application (if you want to see my art, feel free to check it out here: http://artattack.to/display.php?artist=1000001004 ) Some people have told me to use my art as a hook.

I realize that my ECs and grades pale in comparison to those of all other Ivy applicants, but in the rare event that my fanciful prospects are realized, do you think i would stand a chance at Brown admissions? i might just die of happiness if i do get accepted. Otherwise, i'll try for Smith, Wellesley, Bryn Mawr, Barnard etc....
Thanks guys.

Hard to say when you haven't taken SATs, and with only 2 years in that GPA. If you're looking to do art, check out RISD too. Probably easier to get into than Brown.

I've been told about RISD, but don't quite want to specialize yet. and i know from taking some practice SATs that i'm more or less in that range...Do i have any hope at Brown, maybe early decision or something?
Sorry for my insistence.
Thanks again

As a white female who wants to study art you're going to be up against steep competition at a place like Brown. The scores will help, but they won't entirely compensate for what is a very common demographic. This is one of those times when applying early looks like a good idea. The Janet Reno thing might make a good topic for the essay.

I see...not given. I don't think i want to major in art though; philosophy is my passion, so i figured i would use the art only as a hook, but nothing more, not a major. I couldn't possibly churn out art for four years...
Thanks Argus
