How much does Brown care about applicants taking four years of foreign language?

I doubt taking only three years will help...but how much will it hurt?

By the way English/Econ double major (no grad school for either subject...law school instead.)

Thanks...

The lady who ran the info session I was at 4 years ago (my bro was looking) said they like to see 4 years of a single foreign language, but they of course look at the other courses to see why you might not have taken 4 years.

I didn't take 4. I would imagine that as long as you are keeping yourself academically engaged in another class of more interest or something like that you should be ok.

Thanks for the advice Asianalto and Fredmurtz. I don't care much for Spanish, but I also don't want to weaken my prospects for Brown.

Fred, what would you consider to be a suitable replacement for AP Spanish? AP Psychology is the only other elective offered, but it's not as challenging...perhaps an upper-level English course at the local community college?

Hey, I have a similar question to Deerhunter's. I have take French up to level 3 (sophomore year) but then last year, there was only one French 4 class offered in my school, and it conflicted with my AP Calc class and AP Bio, so I couldn't take it. This year, I will try to take French 4 again, but I still don't know if it will fit in my schedule, because not many students take French in my school so there are less classes available. Do you think I should explain my schedule conflicts to the admissions officers, or will that just sound like a lame excuse? I really wanted to continue with French, but I didn't want to give up calc and bio. any advice/comments would be appreciated! thanks

Maud,I would think your GC should explain that. Deer, Do you have the same Screenname you used to?

Maud, I don't think you have a problem--your GC can explain that you couldn't take French...I just don't WANT to take Spanish ;-)

Fred, are you referring to my email address? Yes, I have the same one...I'll put it back into my profile.
