Discus: Ivy League Schools: Columbia University: 2004 Archive: Columbia only takes 2 sat II's??
By Theali00 (Theali00) on Saturday, July 17, 2004 - 11:19 pm: Edit

I was looking at the application to columbia on their site, and they only give u space to write SAT writing and two other SAT II's. Will it count much if we took more than those 3 SAT II's and did well on them? Thx a lot.

Just like it'll count if you take more than three for every other college. Columbia's application requires only three, but other colleges have up to six slots for students who take more than the required amount. Sitting for more than three will make it easier to pick and choose for the ones you want to self-report. I sincerely doubt that the AdCom will hold it against you if you took say, five tests, and did badly on two; they only need three. If you did well on more than the required number, though, it could be a benefit, since some schools have extra space just for that situation.

Will the adcoms see however all the SAT's we took?

When you send in the score report, yes they will.

Yes. Unless you took them under Score Choice, an option that ended a couple of years ago. Anys scores there have to be released before they are reported and you can specify which tests you want released. Now if you take any SAT2s they all appear on the form even if you just want to report your SAT1s, a consideration, if you are applying to schools that do not require a SAT2.

Well, the question is then, do the adcoms see the score reports, or a summary? Since they only ask for three, maybe that's what's reported to them.

One reeason we really liked the Columbia app was the fact that they emphasize that they really don't need extra things: 3 SATs are fine, we don't need your APs, please don't supplement on the short-essay answers, etc. More than any other application, it discouraged a need to pile on the credentials; their attitude seems to be that they ask for what they want, and that's enough. My son and I both appreciated that!

Also, the admissions office & staff at Columbia is kind of small and not that well suited to deal with 17,000 applications per year.

The application is out? I thought it wasn't coming until August something...

By Arangatan (Arangatan) on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 06:10 pm: Edit

So, okay.. i have taken 4 Sat II's.. three of my scores are great, 800, 780, and 740. My fourth one though is a 690. So, will Columbia hold my 4th score against me? or will they just disregard it. I'm asking, becuz I want to apply early to Columbia, so I wont have time to retake the 690 (i'm taking the sat i in oct, and they dont accept nov scores right?) so should i still apply early or apply regular?

>>they dont accept nov scores right?

They do.

Now is this application out, and where can I find it?

My son got in ED with a third score lower than your fourth. don't change to RD just for that.

By Arangatan (Arangatan) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 07:58 pm: Edit

Thanks Garland, you have no idea how worried i was about that. Also, Number9 are u sure? Their application says you have to have testing completed BY Nov 1st.

By Number9 (Number9) on Monday, July 19, 2004 - 08:27 pm: Edit

Arangatan, yes I am sure. Its been covered numerous times about testing deadlines for ED, and they accept November scores.

Where is this application now?

By Blah1111 (Blah1111) on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 - 12:50 am: Edit

Online, it says you have to complete testing by the "November Test Date," not "November 1st."
