This is my gf's deal...shes got a perfect A (A+ where applicable)average and has taken basically all APs she can, prob 9 or 10 before graduation. Shes been dancing at a competitive level for a million years and shes pretty good. Shes involved in a lot of community stuff including bringing Rebecca's Closet to Long Island. She tutors many hours a week, works with her local organizations to help educate kids and is a teacher at her temple. Shes also a model and was in the latest lenny kravitz video (for about half a second but w.e lol!) but shes been in ads and stuff so its not bad. her scores a below brown avg. no way around it. High 12s Sat I, ~680 on her SAT IIs. If she applies ED does she have a chance? Her essays will be good and her recs will be very good

I'm not gonna say Brown "lowers its standards" for Rhode Island students, because it doesn't. HOWEVER, it doesn't care as much about RAW NUMBERS for local students. This means if your girlfriend proves she's a good writer/smart in other ways (and maybe uses the modelling thing as an EC, develops the RC thing), she can get in. ED will help a lot. I think she should try to get at least a 1300, but I personally know SEVERAL rhode island students with 1200s/low 1300s at brown.

Brown tried to recruit local and rhode island students because they can benefit the area around brown, after attending the school. So it accepts a lot of people based off unique talents and NOT numbers.

Have her write a great essay and retake the SAT (maybe even the ACT), and then don't worry about it. You have a decent shot ED, and those chances will increase if she's at the top of her class (brown LOVES top RI students).

Good luck..........

lol she lives in Long Island, New York not Rhode Island, but its ok i appreciate the input. anybody else? the other schools shes applying RD if shes deferred/rejected arent nearly as selective but she likes them and im sure she'll go somewhere so ive been telling her if she really likes Brown to give it a shot ED.

That is bs about brown and RI anyway. I read once that about less than 4% are locals. The truth of the matter is that brown is a "whole picture" school so far as admissions go. Your GFs SAT will not be a deal breaker--- she should apply if her other interests are as strong as you say and if she can write a really good essay. Goodluck!!!

Just to let you know, when I applied to Brown I was in the exact same boat. I didn't think I could get in. My high school scores were at and above Brown's norms. My ECs were great. However, my SAT's were 1280 (both times I took it, though when you combine the two highest scores, which is what Brown does, I got a 1300) and my ACT was a 29. In the end, I wrote a killer essay and sent in a 4 page resume explaining my ECs (if you want a copy just to see what I did for my ECs email me). I was shooting for RD because I had already been rejected from Yale EA Single Choice. Finally, I found out I was accepted at Brown University, Carleton College, St. Thomas, rejected at U of Penn, and Yale University. What's the moral of the story? Yeah, she can get into Brown, but there is no guarantee. But, if she doesn't get into Brown, there are so many amazing schools into which she can be easily admitted. She'll be fine.

wow thats a relief, would it be alright if i asked her to email you? out of curiousity did you end up going to brown? do you think ED would help her chances even more?

I did end up going to Brown. She can email me if she wants. My email is student@brown.edu. If she feels like getting in touch that'd be great.
