Do freshman transfer applicants have less of a shot than sophomores, given all other factors (except amount of classes taken) constant?
By Sarahw (Sarahw) on Sunday, June 06, 2004 - 03:47 pm: Edit
blah,
i think it's more orb less equal for both, except freshmen have the option of electing to transfer fall or spring...i'm not sure if junior entries can come in in the spring..
northrams,
i'm going to be a rising soph at a top 5 LAC.
stats anyone?
By Sarahw (Sarahw) on Monday, June 07, 2004 - 05:59 pm: Edit
are junior year transfers allowed to transfer in either fall or spring or is it just fall? i've heard both...but i could be wrong.

sarahw-
i sent an email to admissions asking them that same question - no response thus far. Stats:
1530 SAT (800 Verbal, 730 math)
3.9+ GPA
-Honors program (ranked #1 for 2 year schools in US)
-Phi Theta Kappa (International Honor Society of 2 Year College) President,
-Sigma Chi Eta (National Speech honor society) President,
-Freshman/Sophomore Senator,
-Winner, 2004 Beacon Conference for Student Scholars at 2 Year colleges
-3rd Place, SUNY Rockland Speech Competition
-Outstanding Student Service Award
Im not going to get into HS Stats, suffice to say they were borderline for HYP with very strong ECs

sarahw, what are ur stats?
By Up40love (Up40love) on Thursday, June 17, 2004 - 01:06 am: Edit
I was just looking at Harvard's transfer application website and it says that applications will not be available until November 2005. It's not just in one place, though. Every time the date is posted, it is 2005, not Nov. 2004. Does that mean that Harvard is freezing transfer applications for Fall 2005?
By Sarahw (Sarahw) on Thursday, June 17, 2004 - 03:06 am: Edit
my stats are pretty ordinary. 1490 (780v) SAT I, 700,700,650 SAT II. 3.7ish GPA at a top 5 lac. im doing research at a hospital, i sing in the school choir, and i'm part of the student gov. that's about it i think...
what is your tentative major?
i'm not sure if it's a typo (about the 2005 bit)...i just hope it is, it would be strange of them to just freeze it for one year. has anyone emailed the adcom?
By Up40love (Up40love) on Thursday, June 17, 2004 - 09:48 am: Edit
I emailed them last night but have yet to get a response
By Cornellhopeful (Cornellhopeful) on Saturday, June 19, 2004 - 12:04 pm: Edit
i'm probably applying as a sophomore transfer.
African American Male
Georgetown University
3.69 GPA
1340 SAT I
took Gen Psych at Georgetown, GPA 3.67(MUST go up)
National Achievement Finalist
Violist
Model UN(will continue at Gtown)
Reason to transfer-Gtown only has one astronomy class that i'll be taking, and I'm really interested in it(not as a major), and Harvard as a planetary sciences department. I'm a psychology major, pre-med. Also interested in taking a course or two in biomedical engineering, and Gtown doesn't have ANY engineering courses(except if you count computer science, but i'm not interested that much). Harvard is also more diverse than Gtown, though it still has diversity. So basically, I want to transfer for more astronomy courses, more engineering courses, diversity, and they also have a few health policy courses open to undergrads, as well as mind, brain, and behavior. All things that I can't do or study in depth at Gtown.
Should I take the SAT over again, or just focus on getting high grades in college?
By Nivea (Nivea) on Monday, June 21, 2004 - 09:01 pm: Edit
Cornellhopeful, I would put more focus on getting high grades in college than on taking the SAT over again, as the adcom puts less emphasis on the SAT scores of transfer applicants than they do on the SAT scores of high school applicants.
Anyway, to answer Sarahw's question, yes, I was planning on applying next year, but now, I'm not able to because of personal reasons.
By the way, if a transfer applicant has a gap, say a year or two, in their schooling, would it hurt their chances?
Thanks!
By Up40love (Up40love) on Tuesday, June 22, 2004 - 03:29 am: Edit
I think that depending on what the applicant accomplished during the gap, it might enhance his chances. Hopefully the applicant wouldn't squander the opportunity to develop personally and subsequently enter the transferring phase with a clearer picture of why he wants to do so. This would then translate into better essays to futher convince adcoms that he belongs at Harvard.

I just noticed the website has been modified to say "Applications will for transfer admission will be available in November 2004" instead of 2005.
Is anyone feeling particularly antsy about receiving/downloading/completing applications? It's bordering on obsession.
To what other schools is everyone thinking about applying?
By Northrams (Northrams) on Wednesday, July 14, 2004 - 07:54 pm: Edit

don't get antsy. just find out the essay questions, and you should be good. they usually don't change to often.
By Up40love (Up40love) on Friday, July 16, 2004 - 12:51 am: Edit
Does anyone want the essay questions from the 2003-2004 app in case they may be the same?
