Does anyone know if Harvard has a preference for people who excel at things like Math Team (ARML, NYSML, AMC, AIME, USAMO, MOP, IMO, etc.) or actual research (Intel, Siemens-Westinghouse, ISEF, etc.)?
I'm still trying to understand why people value math team so highly. It seems a lot more arbitrary than actual research

The two are totally different. If you are good at math team then join that becasue math team tests knowledge and fast thinking skills. Rsearch on the other hand combines a very different set of skills which are not needed for success in math team. Thus, do the one that you like the most. Intel STS and IMO winners usually make it into the same caliber of colleges.

You don't have to be a math genius to do good math research. On the other hand, you have to be a VERY smart person to make MOP/IMO.

Vecter that is true. Although, you still have to study math ALL the time to have the skills needed. It still requires practice.
