Has anyone received anything past the initial envelope with the dining, housing, etc info???? I'm wondering when transfers get to choose classes and find out where they are going to be housed???/

By Internationalcc (Internationalcc) on Thursday, May 06, 2004 - 02:26 pm: Edit

Without finaid I cannot decide on any of those things so I am patiently waiting for my finaid package [ETA mid/late May]...

I did receive transfer credit evaluation [accepted 32 credits out of 42]...

international, did you try to transfer any math credits? which 10 credits didn't they accept? why didnt they accept them? thanks.

By Stricly_Bloom (Stricly_Bloom) on Thursday, May 06, 2004 - 08:27 pm: Edit

I applied this year as a freshman to Cornell, but I was rejected. I have accepted admission to a college I feel only lukewarm about. Of course, I am going to try to make the most of my time there -- and I will try to enjoy it. But in the event that I find that I dislike the school, I know that I will want to transfer to Cornell.

My question is: although I am not sure whether or not I will be transferring in the future, should I call Cornell's admissions office to ask what about why my freshman application was weak? Should I mention that I have been thinking about possibly transferring? Would the office of undergrad admissions be very vague about the reasons (citing the strong applicants they receive) -- or would they actually be of help?

I have heard that discovering an application's weakness is helpful, and I doubt that the office of undergrad admissions would keep my application for very long (or at least, by the time I would be ready to transfer).

So I think that if I were to call and ask about my application, this would be the time to do it. However, I don't want to seem like I've already decided to transfer, since understandably that is not very wise. And I am not sure if calling would even be helpful.

Any comments? Should I even bothing calling? And if so, what exactly do I say?

Thanks!

By Internationalcc (Internationalcc) on Thursday, May 06, 2004 - 10:20 pm: Edit

Star --> they did not take 10 math credits, why? B/C the starting point is AB or BC Calc or Calc I and I had a few years in between HS and college and they would not let me take those so I kinda started all over again! However if I get to go to Cornell I'll start off with either PreCalc or Calc I depending on the summer progress...I am very good with math it's just the gap between the HS and college that scr*wed me!

All others they accepted!

How 'bout yours?

By Stargzrlilychk1 (Stargzrlilychk1) on Sunday, May 09, 2004 - 11:44 pm: Edit

they have not done any credit evaluations yet for me, but this semester (since i will be entering in january) they want me to take "the next level of math" for me. i think (b/c i took pre-calc in high school) that the next level for me is calc, which is awful because i am TERRIBLE at math. i fear it with all of my heart and soul. i cower away from math textbooks. i have to call cornell to find out if they will accept anything lower than calc as credit.

By Tomonlineli (Tomonlineli) on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 08:03 am: Edit

You will have to take calc which ever way you look at it. Calc is a requirement for the ILR school.

By Noodleman (Noodleman) on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 08:50 am: Edit

Star: Me and math no es simpatico also. I feel your pain.

*bites lip a la Bill Clinton*

3 tips:

1. See if they'll accept statistics. I hate math and I had a 99.72 final avg in stats. It's like applied math, which I take to a bit more than stuff like calc.

2. Do like people do with the SATs. Go to borders, get some self-study stuff on calc, make it a personal mission to understand it, even if you get hives and develop an unsightly twitch. Start now. Also, meet with your calc prof asap and explain that you're not a math person and that you'll need xtra attention. He/she will probably be impressed with your honesty and obsequiousness, and go out of their way to help, if you are earnest enough.

3. Cheat. No, I'm kidding.

By Internationalcc (Internationalcc) on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 08:58 am: Edit

Hey guys if we all get to go to Cornell [keeping my fingers crossed] I will peer tutor you in math [100+ average] :-) free of charge :-)

By Tomonlineli (Tomonlineli) on Monday, May 10, 2004 - 09:20 am: Edit

Star: From what I remember, Calc is a requirement and you will have to take 2 Statistics courses. The woman that I interviewed with told me that if you have taken Statistics previously then you can try and test out of the classes. But it will be in vain because you will just have to take a different Math course. So take calc at your school and prepare for statistics at Cornell. Again, I would like to mention that this is what I was told. You should confirm this with the adcom.

Hey ladies and gentlemen. Don't fret, I talked with the ILR adcom a few days ago and she said that alot of the larger colleges take more time on their transfer applicants because the schools are just that much larger. With ILR and a department of 750, the transfer apps can be gone through in one day. Some of the other colleges take weeks. Hold hope!!!!!!!

Does it affect their decision if you rush them? I was accepted elsewhere and need to confirm as soon as possible. I want to ask whether they can just hurry and make a decision on my application, but I'm afraid to rush them. Anyone know whether it matters? (I would attend Cornell over the other school in a heart beat, though, so I don't want to screw anything up)

Just read on Cornell news that Nick Berg, the civilian beheaded in Iraq on Saturday was a Cornell student :-( WOW what a shock!

"Cornell University statement on Nick E. Berg
All members of the Cornell University community are shocked and saddened by the devastating news of the death of Nick Evan Berg, who was a student here for two and a half years.

Nick enrolled as a freshman student in the College of Engineering at Cornell in the Fall of 1996. He spent the Spring 1998 semester in Uganda through Cornell's Study Abroad Program. He took a voluntary leave of absence from the university after completing the Fall 1998 semester.

Nick Berg is remembered by his professors and classmates at Cornell as an excellent student who made the Dean's List every semester that he studied here. His adventuresome nature took him to Uganda, where he studied development issues. He was a serious, caring individual who expressed the desire to help people and have a positive influence in the world.

We extend our deepest condolences to the Berg family and to Nick's many friends and colleagues during these difficult days".

UBC. Now just waiting on Cornell and Brown.

By Noripj (Noripj) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 07:27 pm: Edit

I called today and was forwarded three times until I spoke with someone in CAS. They still haven't decided and said it may run into June... Seriously annoying! Anyone else hear anything recently?

By Internationalcc (Internationalcc) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 07:31 pm: Edit

I see some people getting off the waitlists but I am not sure whether they are freshmen or transfers [CAS in particular]...

By Noripj (Noripj) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 07:32 pm: Edit

I wasn't even aware of a waitlist for transfers. Don't they tell you you're on a waitlist when you are? How do you see that?

By Internationalcc (Internationalcc) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 07:34 pm: Edit

I have no idea. Go under waitlist thread and ask away!

By Martinwjl (Martinwjl) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 11:07 pm: Edit

hey. miss mid-back blonde(internacc). thanks for letting us know that berg was a Cornell student... i think the school will be proud of him! i felt kind of sad about him....

i wish he would go to iraq like 3 months later so that i could see him and shake hand with him...
oh well...

just watched the incredible game between lakers and spurs!suprise ending!

By Beeblerox (Beeblerox) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 11:13 pm: Edit

Well i guess nick berg had the two connections i share. He went to both Drexel and Cornell. People here are pretty sad about his death and i guess same is the case at Cornell.

I saw the video today. Totally disgusting and inhuman. I don't know how someone can do something like that. Pretty sad.

Martin, that comment was in pretty bad taste. -> "i wish he would go to iraq like 3 months later so that i could see him and shake hand with him... "

He was really admirable. Kudos to people like him.

By Cuspidor (Cuspidor) on Thursday, May 13, 2004 - 11:35 pm: Edit

People who are desperate may do stuff like that. People who feel asphixiated by invaders perhaps. Radicals. Radicals suck.

I am going to call on Monday to ask about my application to make SURE it is being reviewed by the committee and hasn't gotten "lost" somehow and they didn't bother to tell me. I keep thinking of that one girl's horror story on the Yale board (I think thats where it happened)... I would be PISSED.

Martinwjl,

Were you fricken serious up there. I just saw the video and can't seem to understand how anyone could so much as consider themselves human after mocking someone with a reference to such a horrible thing. I have never seen anything so discusting in my life. Death is wrong from any end of the fight, but then to mock it, regardless of what side...

You certainly don't belong in an ivy-league school with that mentality. I hope you understand after all your little accomplishments have been made, there's still a ton to be done to become a person with real worth. You need a little emotional intelligence, too. Furthermore, how can you mock anyone with such horrible English. Wherever you come from, go back and leave the rest of civilization alone.

By Meddlingd (Meddlingd) on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 07:17 am: Edit

NJ Finger... that means you are like 3/4? Dartmouth, Corenll, UPenn... what happened with Harvard after your interview? WTG... tough choices! You must have amazing stats!

By Martinwjl (Martinwjl) on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 07:34 am: Edit

wow,wowo.... guys, i guess there is some misunderstanding here. i didn't meant to make fun of the dead hero. i am actually pretty pround of him being also from Cornell....but anyway. don't want to explain further to create more confusion, anyway, i am not a native speaker.

By Internationalcc (Internationalcc) on Saturday, May 15, 2004 - 11:24 am: Edit

Martin you shouldn't have put that smily at the end, makes all the difference! I know you had no bad intentions but it might come across as mocking to someone who has not been around your posts much!

Thanks everyone!

Meddling: So far I'm in at UT Austin, Rice, Dartmouth, Cornell, and Penn. I'm still waiting on Harvard and Stanford. I'm not holding my breath though. My stats are pretty normal for these schools, but I know for a fact they aren't everything (I got rejected nearly everywhere during freshman admissions two years ago). I'm pretty sure it's all in the essays and how well you can present yourself.

Imisstheeastcst: I applied to Arts and Sciences. I applied from Texas Tech. I think any day now it will be YOUR turn to rock. ;)

Mexico: I didn't receive any email or mail. I STILL haven't a day later. I found out by looking at the admissions page. Good luck!

WOOHOO congrats fingercuffs!!!!!

ok, so sorry ive disappeared for a while guys, moving back home and such. but ive decided that im not going to stay at u.tampa next semester, but go to community college instead cause its like 10 k cheaper. i hope cornell won't get too upset about this.
also, i still haven't figured this "take the next level of math" stuff out yet. im thinking that if i take pre-calc, then i will still need to take calc at cornell. anyone know about this?
also, does anyone know how harshly they evaluate guaranteed transfers? i mean, is it the same as they would with regular applicants or are they just checking to make sure that we've met all of the requirements? I ask because, my grades slipped a little this semester. it wasn't a lot, but from a 3.8 to a 3.6 (making my cumulative a 3.7) all that they required was a 3.3, but do u guys think they'll take a lot of notice of this?

Sorry to hear imisstheast. I know firsthand how disappointing this can be. Rest assured it is not the end of life. CAS certainly appears to be statistically the hardest school to tfr into. If you really feel like it has to be Cornell try ALS... they accept 60% of their tfr applicants compared to CAS 10-15%. On top of that you have geographical disadvantages as they probably don't need any girls from the NE in terms of their diversity. GL in all your future endeavors. Just from sharing with you these past couple of months I can tell you are very nice and I hope you achieve your goals!!
