By Hikarikun (Hikarikun) on Tuesday, April 06, 2004 - 05:18 am: Edit

expected family contribution: 10000 (6000 at other schoools, but 10k at cornell)

summer earning: 2000

scholarships & grant: 20000

loans: 10000

total aid: 32000

COA: 42000

So I'm getting 20k for grant. This is a good deal compared to what other schools offered. But still, my family can hardly afford it. Should I appeal? Will it work? I have no idea about FA:(

efc: 20,000 [FAFSA-26,000, actual-12,000]
summer: 2,000
grant: 8,600
outside scholarship: I claimed 1,000
loans: 9600
total aid: 19,000

So i'd have the 2000 on summer, 9600 in loans, and the difference of like 8000 in the family contribution. Hmm. No.

EFC: 308.
I have no loans (yay!)and we'll only end up paying 500 bucks. Gees, CU did MUCH better than my state school, which gapped me 8000 dollars.

Hikarikun, definately appeal your package if you know that your family will not be able to afford the cost. What have you got to lose? By any chance, are you going up for cornell days? If you are, you will be alot more effective in the appealing process in person than you'll be over the telephone. Also, If you have any paper work ( Income tax, proof of deduction in wages etc..) make sure that you carry/ provide them as well. They will ultimately, either make or break your case.

loan: 9,000
Fed/Univ grants: 19,000
Parents exp contr: 8,000
my contrib: 2,000

Okay, where did that 5,000 from by parents expected to come if I have an FAFSA efc of 800. Honestly, how does CU expect us to make 2000 in one summer. I don't think I want to pay this much for Cornell.

By Sunshine916 (Sunshine916) on Tuesday, April 06, 2004 - 11:21 am: Edit

our EFC was 24,000 on the FAFSA.

Parent Contribution: 22,400 (whoa!)
Summer Self Help: 2000
Loans: 0
Cornell University Grant: $7800+
McMullen Scholar Grant: $11,000

Total Aid: $18,000

Williams' finaid was equally good (except i get $3000/yr in loans).

hmmmmmm...

hmmm...i'm kinda confused when it comes to my summer contribution.....my whole application pretty much was about how i'm really involved in volunteer stuff - and a lot of that is during the summer...i kinda get the gist from the uni that they're over there saying "hmm...thats cool that you did that and all, but now all we care about is money" because i wrote in that i planned on continuing all this volunteer work....grrr

By Sunshine916 (Sunshine916) on Tuesday, April 06, 2004 - 05:21 pm: Edit

the finaid office works separately from admissons.

the admissions office knows u volunteer and such. the financial aid office doesnt.

and to be very very honest, i dont think they care :(:( it really IS all about the money at most colleges.

I'm still waiting for this packet...hopefully it comes soon.

This is the piece of paper that keeps Berkeley upon its high pedestal right now. If Cornell's offer is good, Berkeley may have some good competition :D
