Is there any way I can improve my waitlist chances? Report new school stuff? Talk again to the interviewer? Anything?

my friends i got in. and the email goes:

April 1, 2004

Mr. Itsallcool
Dear Mr....
I am delighted to inform you that the Committee on Admissions and Financial
Aid has voted to offer you a place in the Harvard Class of 2008. Following
an old Harvard tradition, a certificate of admission is enclosed. Please
accept my personal congratulations for your outstanding achievements.

This year nearly twenty thousand students applied for the sixteen hundred
and fifty places in the entering class. Faced with many more talented and
highly qualified candidates than it had room to admit, the Admissions
Committee took great care to choose individuals with exceptional character
as well as unusual academic and extracurricular strengths. The Committee
is convinced that you will make important contributions during your college
years and beyond.

Our faculty and students extend a special invitation for you to visit
Cambridge over the next few weeks. If you feel a visit would be helpful in
making your final college choice, we hope you will take advantage of this
opportunity. An invitation is enclosed.

We need to know by May 1 whether or not you plan to accept our offer of
admission and have enclosed a return postcard to facilitate your reply. If
you accept admission for this coming September, further information will be
sent to you over the summer by the Freshman Dean's Office. Each year some
admitted students choose to defer entrance for a year and find their many
and varied experiences extremely rewarding. If you would like to defer,
please tell us about your alternative plans.

Among the enclosed materials you will find a final School Report Form,
which must be completed by your school counselor and returned to us at the
end of this academic year. The Committee on Admissions reserves the right
to withdraw its offer of admission under certain conditions described on
the postcard enclosed for your response.

We have a longstanding commitment to meet the financial needs of our
admitted students. No limit has been set on the financial resources
devoted to making the College fully accessible to all students of promise,
and we have a firm policy of making supportive offers of need-based
financial aid. We encourage you to contact us now or at any time during
your years here if you have questions or concerns about financial aid or if
you have additional information that might be helpful to us in
understanding your family's financial circumstances.

I very much hope that you will decide to join us at Harvard. We have
enclosed a statement about Harvard's opportunities which might be helpful
to you in making your college choice. Whatever your decision may be, you
have my best wishes for every future success.

Sincerely,
William R. Fitzsimmons
Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid

This e-mail message is sent for your convenience. A letter sent by post
will confirm the decision of the Harvard College Admissions Committee.

I was deferred and haven't gotten my e-mail... SURELY they are sending them to deferred people too, I can't imagine why they wouldn't, but you bring up a great point.

By Papalemming (Papalemming) on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 06:36 pm: Edit

Am I the only one who finds this waitlist thing oddly amusing?

I practically expected to be insulted by the Admissions Committee, so even if I am rejected later, I find this flattering.

Where is MY EMAIL??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I hope this is not their idea of April Fools day. What is so ••••••• hard about sending email? Damn Harvard.

PS *I did not mean that. Please don't ban me.*

By Karen182 (Karen182) on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 07:34 pm: Edit

2.5 hours later, nothing is in Miss Karen's inbox. I'm assuming it's silly to call, right? It's late on the east coast, and they'd be overwhelmed with phonecalls if they were actually telling us anything.

By Mouse (Mouse) on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 07:34 pm: Edit

Xdtish,
I got the letter in the mail today (rejected), but I didn't get my email, when I checked for Yale (rejected there too) at six. I finally got the email rejection at "18:54" as almost seven.
I don't know if they are doing it by what you got or ABC. I am a "Z"

By Webhappy2 (Webhappy2) on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 07:46 pm: Edit

It's possible there's a trend.. we can't tell how big a gap between when the person checked his/her email since receiving the email, but if we assume that it's about equal for everyone, it appears that waitlists came first, then acceptances, and now rejections are out

By Coolnessitself (Coolnessitself) on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 07:47 pm: Edit

Is anyone else still waiting for an email? I tested the autoreply thing a few days ago and nothing. The outlook looks bad b/c of the trend you speak of, but now I just want closure.

By Collegeparent (Collegeparent) on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 09:22 pm: Edit

Talk about never knowing how this system will work out. Heard of four kids from same secondary school who applied to Harvard and the results show that nothing is truly fair in this process.

First kid -- Male non-URM, 1600 SATs, 4.0 GPA, outstanding varsity sports, great recs, terrific community service, strong essays -- deferred EA, denied RD. Accepted Williams, Colgate, Cornell, Georgetown, probably Dartmouth.

Second kid -- Female non-URM, 1510 SATs, 3.9 GPA, no sports, amazing ECs & essays, national scholastic contest winner, school leadership positions, very popular -- accepted RD. Also accepted Michigan, Duke, Yale, Columbia, UCLA.

Third kid -- Female non-URM, 1510 SATs (four times taking them after two years of prep courses), 3.7 GPA, one sport, OK recs, nothing special, three-time legacy (sibling, parent, married relative) -- accepted RD. Accepted Tufts; denied/WL Duke, Georgetown, Yale, Stanford (deferred EA), Colgate.

Fourth kid -- Male non-URM, 1580 SATs, 3.7 GPA, nationally recognized for outstanding scholarship in science and mathematics, two sports (captain), excellent recs & essays -- WL/RD. Accepted Stanford (after deferred EA), MIT, Michigan, Northwestern, Penn, Columbia.

Three deserved Harvard, one manipulated the system. So what does that say? Harvard is just like any other college in America -- no better and no worse. And for some, it's the best college that money can buy.

By Stevennle (Stevennle) on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 09:22 pm: Edit

Is Harvard harder to get into Stanford or is it vice versa? I got into Stanford but deferred and then rejected by harvard. My friend got into harvard but rejected by Stanford. I don't get it..........

By Botoed (Botoed) on Thursday, April 01, 2004 - 09:34 pm: Edit

This is super annoying because I sent a test email purposely to make sure I would be able to receive this- and it worked! I don't understand why I didn't get an email! I just wish I knew. . .

Harvard application fee: $60
Yale application fee: $65
Georgetown application fee: $60
Travel expenses for college interviews: $30
SAT I and II tests: $150

Getting rejected by all three and offered a full scholarship to UW-Madison, priceless.

For somethings money can't by, for everything else, there's your local state school.

Rejected...(prays to Princeton gods)...you're my last chance for hope!

When my daughter was waiting for Harvard's e-mail in 2002, they told them that they would begin sending them at 8:00AM and that could it take up to 8 hours (this might not be the exact time or hours) ---- but it was a long wait - she got hers at about 1:00 in the afternoon

If any of you watched the Duke-Illinois game last Friday, the many obscene blocked shots gave an accurate impression of the manner in which my application to Harvard was REJECTED.

Yale it is, then.

Rejected. 1550, all state athlete, 800 800 790, 2/270, great essays and recs.

Waitlisted Yale

Accepted MIT, Columbia, Amherst, Williams, Pomona.

Pending Princeton, but track coach is pulling for me there so I'm hoping...

Deferred EA from Harvard.

It's a shame I can't trade some of my other acceptances for an acceptance at Harvard, but hey, that's the way it goes. They are all great schools. Congrats to everyone that got in, and to those of us who didn't, it sounds like we all have some great other options to look at. Best of luck to everyone!

I'm so relieved this process is over. For those of you who got into your choice schools, congratulations. For those of you who didn't, don't let this validate who you are. The entire process can be so random and things don't always make sense.

Overall, I'm happy with my results although my 1st choice school, Yale, waitlisted me after deferring me EA. I am an URM over 1550 SAT (800V) 800 writ/750 bio/750 Fr(took 2X). I am a Nat'l Merit Finalist, Nat'l Achievement Finalist, take tough courses at elite private in south. I have an A- average and tons of National awards, very good recs and Passionate EC for over 10 years. Here are my results:

ACCEPTED:
USC(Pesidential Scholarship + half-tuition scholarship),
NYU(Baird Scholarship),

I'm not the same Brownsugar that I've just seen who's posted before. Sorry Brownsugar for using your name. I couldn't remember the name I posted under months before and thought it may have been Brownsugar. I posted as Blackpearl (SAT 1580, ACT 33, etc) and I will try to remember this if I post again.

Okay....y'all can stop with the posts and the bragging now. There really is no more excuse to keep on posting stats unless people are asking for them.

I still didn't get the e-mail, which completely boggles me. The test e-mail worked fine, and the website says i checked the "tell me by e-mail" box...I think I'm going to call the office today, if i can find a phone number.

hey bullseye, i got rejected from yale and upenn but was admitted to harvard! so relax, you never know what may happen!

By weirdoo on Friday, April 02, 2004 - 02:39 pm: Edit

Look ppl. 2029 applied. expected 78% enrollment. So 78/100 x 2029 = 1582.62...
Places available is 1650..so 1650 - 1583 = 67 ppl expected to be admit from the waiting list..!!!!!!..
i am waitlisted...as well!
Those of you who got admitted somewhere else...e.g. stanford, yale mit..etc.....please..decline..harvard's offer....help the waitlist!..show mercy..!!!..we are relying on you!

Karen182 -

Check to see if your spam blocker has filtered the Harvard e-mail into a junk mail folder. It has happened to others.

By Bern700 (Bern700) on Saturday, April 03, 2004 - 02:34 am: Edit

wow this guy at my school got in and he had relatively low stats (for harvard standards). Everyone at my school is so jealous of him, I'm pretty happy for him though. He had 1280,3.9, a few AP, top 12% rank, varsity soccer (3 years), community service, NHS, Spanish Honor society.

Hopefully he'll have fun with all of you admits next year. Congrats to all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I sort of wish that I wouldn't have applied ED to Penn because I had to withdraw and I never found out if I got into harvard...oh well. Go Quakers (hehe we have a funny mascot)!

again congrats to all the acceptees! To those who didn't get in, c'est la vie. There's always transfering...
