What should i do when I visit the campus? Which places are essential? Where can I go to get my name recorded so they will know I was there? Speak to me. Thanks.

It is difficult to get into most of the buildings without a University ID so I would recommend taking a tour.

My daughter was not shown the first-year dorms when she took the tour so she hung outside of John Jay and Carman (the two main first-year dorms) and looked for approachable people to ask if she could see their dorm rooms. Don't expect a deluxe living environment....the dorms are rather ratty but part of the fun is making your room a personal expression.

Contact admissions and see if you can go to a class or two. Check out the bookstore. Students are going in and out of Lerner Hall all day so grab a latte and people watch for a bit....or hit one of the cafes on Broadway and eat outside. It will give you a feel for the energy of the neighborhood. If you like books then it is also worth going to Labyrinth Books on West 112th.

When I visited, I went on the tour and the information session. The information session is dead intimidating, yet informative. The tour was very good. The student tour guide was very nice and willing to answer any and all questions. We did get to look inside the Carman dorms, but I don't think that is actually part of the tour - the tour guide just kinda said to any random person "Hey, who would like to show these prospectives what a Columbia room looks like," and, surprisingly, many people jumped to offer. When you go for the information session or tour, they have you write down all your contact information so that they know you visited. Also, on the application, it asks you if you have every visited Columbia, and if so, when. Hope that helps! I enjoyed my day at Columbia very much, and wish I could have stayed longer! (like, possibly, for the next four years...)
