Potential transfer student to Cornell, here- wondering how many of you transfers (accepted, matriculated) had interviews? SAT Stats? EC's Freshman year of College (before transferring to Cornell)? Freshman year GPA? Did you send AP Test scores/what were your stats? Answers greatly appreciated!!!

Also, if you are applying for transfer (for Fall 2004) please post your stats, too! and what college and major applying to. Thanks a bunch!!!

I am also applying to Cornell for the Fall 2004 semester. I am currently a freshman at Tulane University and I am applying to the school of agriculture and life sciences as a business major. Here are my stats:

College:
-3.824 gpa fall semester, 15 hours
-dean's list
-honors program student
-member of Student Alumni Ambassadors (alumni relations chair)
-member of GreenWave Ambassadors
-give campus tours and host prospective students
-Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity (Social Chair)
-Volunteer for New Orleans Outreach Program
-work 14 hours a week
-excellent recommendation from english teacher
-decent rec from college counselor
-good rec from high school psych teacher

High School:

-1410 SAT 1 (750 verbal, 660 math)
-3.3 UW gpa
-4.9 W gpa
-rank: 78/560
-Founder of Aviation Club and VP (12th)
-President of Spanish Honor Society (11, 12)
-member of NHS
-treasurer of FBLA (11, 12)
-member of student gov and class council (9-12)

I didn't do that great in HS, not even top 10% of my class. However, I think my college gpa might help out. Although my classes weren't too difficult.

Music Theory (3 hours): A
Calculus 1 (4 hours): A-
Freshman English (4 hours): A
Spanish (4 hours): A-

Current Schedule:

Microeconomics
Macroeconomics
Calculus 2
Psychology
Spanish 2

Total: 17 hours

What do you think my chances are? I am also applying to UPENN, NYU, UVA, and UNC Chapel Hill. Cornell is my top choice. What are your stats?

Tulane-
I think your stats look good. Its good you're taking micro and macro right now- shows you're preparing for the CALS business major. I noticed you were in FBLA in HS- I was a VP of NJ DECA! Do u know if they have college level FBLA or DECA at Cornell? Did you apply for Freshman admission last year?

Transfer CAS Spring 2004

4.0 GPA Sarah Lawrence
SAT around 1200
ECs: three clubs, volunteering with abused horses, part-time job.

CAS does not give interviews to transfers.

SLC- I remember you posting a while ago- you transferred as an Anthro major right? How are you finding the anthro classes? Are you considering a different major at all/do you know how difficult it would be to transfer after 1 semester to the Hotel School? (This is what I may be contemplating if I am accepted and go to Cornell). Also, did you need/receive any F.A.? I am kind of wondering about that too. Thanks.

Imisstheeastcst, I haven't really looked into FBLA or DECA at Cornell, so I am not sure as to whether or not they have it. I know they do have many more business related clubs and opportunities, a lot of which I will be taking advantage of if I am admitted. Also, I didn't apply as a freshman, simply because I didn't think my gpa was good enough. Anyway, there is a high possibility that I might have an internship at Deutsch Bank on Wall Street this summer, thanks to a friend of my sister's. Does anyone think that it will help me get in if I mention it? And to the slc bug, you say you got in with a 4.0 and I was just wondering how hard your schedule was... like what classes and how many hours. I ask because I got a 3.824, but my classes were fairly introductory and easy. Thanks for the help.

By The_Slc_Bug (The_Slc_Bug) on Monday, March 01, 2004 - 02:51 pm: Edit

Tulane, all Sarah Lawrence classes are 5 credit hours, and a freshman can't take more than three of them. None of them were introductory, because for the most part such classes are not available in the humanities and social sciences there; all topics were specific and would be considered above the 100 level at other schools (i.e. my history class was on the relationship between the Franciscan monks and the Nahuas in 16th century Mexico; my anthropology class was on the Sherpas of South Asia and not "Introduction to Anthropology," as I am taking now). SLC is a strange school. Hope that helps. The workload in each of them was heavy, some being more than others. I am finding, though, that the workload at Cornell is heavier. I have very little free time during the week.

Slc_Bug:

What was your HS GPA, I remember you mentioning you had some troubles in HS and that your GPA dropped? Did you explain it to Cornell? When do they usually post decisions for Fall? Any other detail would be more than welcome in our transfer preparation/application process! Thanks! And did you include a separate sheet of ec's and volunteer/work experiences?

By The_Slc_Bug (The_Slc_Bug) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 11:33 am: Edit

Yes, I had a very serious family problem in high school. I wrote a supplemental 'creative' essay about it and including a letter above it to explain why I was sending it. I was top 20% in a Catholic school with a mix of mostly honors, a couple APs, and regular college prep classes in mathematics (my weak subject). Overall GPA was around 3.5.

By Internationalcc (Internationalcc) on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 - 11:55 am: Edit

My HS GPA was 3.9-4 before going into the second trimester of my senior year. I had experienced some tragedies and so on and it dropped significantly. I have a 4.0 GPA in college so that should tell them that I am mature, that I have overcome the problems and that I am fully focused on my education :-) right? I wrote a supplemental essay, about 3/4 of page explaining what happened. Did not want to go too much into details just b/c I did not want to sound desperate. Also I did not want them to treat me as a humanitarian case [coming from a war zone] and feel sorry for me! What do you think?

Thanks.

on a side note, slc, how hard are you finding cornell to be thus far? it the work load as hard as they say it is?

Internationalcc:

I had a very similar experience in high school. I started off like gangbusters and then spiraled down my last 2 years. I wanted desperately to offer some sort of explanation, but I couldn't figure out how to word it to keep from sounding like a victim. My mother remarried to a guy who beat the hell out of me. It was kinda distracting. How do you put something like that into an essay without sounding like a wingnut? I thought it would be a turnoff.

I hope my current 4.0 is enough to convince them I'm worth a shot.

Kudos to you for having the courage to write about your painful experience. It shows a lot of maturity. Good for you. I hope ya get in!

I found out recently that SLC has a higher cut-off TOEFL score than Cornell! Wow. 600 SLC, 550 Cornell!
