When I say bad, I mean -- below perfect. Meaning, maybe, a president of a club, write for the school newspaper, tutor kids, and like to travel, with rank outside the top 1%. Basically, not world-changing stuff, but someone who's interested and passionate about learning.
This is just for all us little people who want just a little ounce of hope in our little lives.

Of course you can... I know a girl who didn't have anything extra-ordinary AFAIK but she must have really showed that she wanted to be at Harvard. I believe she managed to get on TV as an intern for some show recently at Harvard.

Bah, that's a bit hard to explain... considering that they have 1600 slots to fill, they surely admit some ppl that they just get a good vibe from.
