I've heard that Columbia RD is extremely competitive. It's my second choice school (I just got deferred from my first, Yale) and I was curious about my chances, keeping in mind that I'm applying RD. To be honest, I'm not really expecting to get in because some of my academic stats are not stellar (math and science...i get low A's generally, some B's) while the rest...english and history and such... are typically 97 and above. I'm really into the humanities in general, as you can see from the below.
760V 730M 800 writing 770 IIC 750 lit. GPA 3.88 UW.
my courses are tough, but because my school offers only 9 or 10 ap's, six of which are science or foreign language, i have taken no ap courses until this year. took u.s. history and music theory tests tho: a 5 on both.
main ec's include newspaper (4 yrs...paper has received national-level awards), a student political issue publication committee, major theater/music commitment (5 shows a year with lead roles, pres of thespian society, prestigious 6-week summer program, a member of regional, all-state, all-eastern choirs, orchestra (violin), and piano.) also nhs, international thespian society (pres), mu alpha theta, national merit commended scholar, and attended p'ton humanities symposium. involvement at church (i run a kids' choir), and an avid creative writer.
my essay is weird, and my recs should be good.
any opinions? sorry for the long post, btw.

Hey ... Yale was my first choice too, I was deferred, and I am applying to Columbia as well = ) What a coincidence ... I am sure there are tons of "deferred Yalies" who are now applying to Columbia ... which is probably not a good thing ...

Haha, yeah, that's what I'm afraid of.

I'm a deferred Columbian and RD Yale hopeful.
I think the other way may work better.
