my deferral letter seemed as if it were telling me exactly what they wanted me to improve. what did everyone elses say?

It seemed pretty cookie-cutter to me... just "keep your grades up, send as anything you want to by january, and keep in mind that you have no chance of getting in."

The last part was paraphrased, but that's basically what the last sentence of the second paragraph says.

Yeah...I assume it told everybody "often we want to see an applicant's senior year performance" or something like that--right?

It was definitely a form letter because I'm not in high school and they asked me to be sure to ask my counselor to send in my 1st semester grades and all that.
