ok i got in ED im really happy and i know this is what i want

but a lot of ppl that post here (what ive seen - this is like my 2nd ttime on this site) are really like "im a christian i dont smokeor drink, we never hook up etc etc"

um to be blunt. are all columbia students like that? cause that would suck. i pretty much live for parties and loud music and meeting loads of people, and i do work fo rschool but i could not survive only working and reading the biible. are any of you that got in actually *fun*?

i know tis sounds really bitchy and mean but im a little worried...whats the social life really like? can you find fun if you look for it?

oh and what are the guys like i heard theyre horrible but its that way everywhere i reckon!

By Bananabean (Bananabean) on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 08:01 pm: Edit

i heard there's a LOT of drinking from a current freshman

By Vivian (Vivian) on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 08:29 pm: Edit

I'm in.

I can't wait to meet the tall, dark, handsome, intelligent, smart, black man of my dreams!

AHEM, did I just say that out loud?

And YEAH guys!!! What am i gunna DO? Like I want a single but then I don't. I want a double but i mean, what if I want to bring a MAN back for the night? Let's just be frank.

Kick my roommate out? Gimme a break! The single vs. double isssue is a big issue for me, because i need my space, but at the same time i want to meet people-- the friends of my roommates and so on!

Vivian

Sorry if I sound a little on the horny side? This excitement has just aroused all these feelings, etc etc etc! Especially when I hear songs with JayZ and Pharell and they're screamin' "Neeeeeeeeew Yoooooooooork, Neeeeeeeew Yooooooooooooork!" I just start dreaaaaaaamin..... and makin looooooove.....AHEM, whoah.

Folk Hero, yeah man! I'm sooooo psyched! This is the best thing that's ever happened to me. I can't wait to meet you guys, too!

I hear there is a "Days on Campus" weekend in late April, when they invite all prospectives to see the campus, as to persuade them to choose Columbia etc etc etc. Are you guys going? I'm gunna! Plus, I think around that time you can get a closer look at dorms and choose and pick and talk about financial aid yadda yadda!

Vivian =)

HAHAHA---> Yeah xToastx, thats what I'm sayin!!!!!!!!!!!! haha!!! I'm down for anything, this is just a dream come true. Hey man, just to let you know, I am one of those "normal kids" who likes to work hard, AND PARTY TOO!

there will alwasy be a party at Columbia. not everyone there will be a "nerd." If you ned a party organizer talk to me.

By Me1 (Me1) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 08:07 pm: Edit

Columbia is gonna be SOO awesome. I'm excited already. Well, I was excited since I got my acceptance, or possibly before.

Ok when I was spending the night there, this guy kept trying to offer me drugs. Of course I did not accept cos I don't do drugs, but wow there are some pretty wild/crazy people there. I mean offering drugs to a visiting high school student doesn't really seem that smart.

By Xtoastx (Xtoastx) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 03:56 pm: Edit

me1: how were the people? guys, girls, everyone...were they nice? hot? i know im concerned with the *wrong* things but...yeah :)

By Me1 (Me1) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 05:49 pm: Edit

Xtoast, everyone was really nice. Yea, there were some hot ppl. You know like a typical college, most ppl ranged from normal to attractive (didn't really see anyone like nerd-gross lol). Anyway, there was one guy who was like SO hot & I was talking to this guy for really long who was really nice + TOTALLY hot... and it turns out he was gay. Now of course I have absolutely nothing against gay people, it was just annoying since I was thinking, like wow about him. Lol. But yea everyone was really nice/friendly, & everyone was smart but social (not like the people who are just smart but study 24/7)

By Theinnocntone (Theinnocntone) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 08:27 pm: Edit

I'm currently a freshman at Columbia, and you're gonna probably find a good mix of people here. There are people who party all the time, and the people that never go out. My friends...we work hard and play hard. There are frat parties, altho the frat scene is really small. With a fairly bad ID you can get into any of the bars in morningside heights. If you wanna party, you will. If you don't, you won't.

If anyone has any specific qs tho, I'd be happy to try answer them.

By Vivian (Vivian) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 09:56 pm: Edit

Theinnocntone,

Umm, yeah are there lots of tall, dark, handsome, intelligent, sexy black men?

Thanks man.

By Mnm86 (Mnm86) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 10:33 pm: Edit

you certainly seem to know what you're looking for!

By Vivian (Vivian) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 11:35 pm: Edit

LOLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!

By Theinnocntone (Theinnocntone) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 11:46 pm: Edit

Yes, but they will either be: a) Gay, or B) An •••••••.

Not that I'm cynical or anything....

No really, I'm sure those kinda guys do exist here. I just have yet to meet them.

By Ceetotheizzle (Ceetotheizzle) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 11:50 pm: Edit

that's messed up because i've never seen a gay guy in person my entire life. Oh and Vivian...lol... does it have to be a tall, dark, handsome, intelligent, sexy black man? Can't it be a tall, dark, handsome, intelligent, sexy white boy?

By Mnm86 (Mnm86) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 11:57 pm: Edit

note: i think the "MAN" bit was important to vivan. i don't want a "boy" either...

By Vivian (Vivian) on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 01:39 pm: Edit

Mnm86 said it just right. I was ready to give in until I read the last word.

In response to your question, although I have certain preferences, I'll always be open to anything and everything.

Questions for Innoctutone:

Please describe a few of the things that you dislike about the Columbia faculty, staff, student body, the city itself (the dirt!) and the campus, social life, curriculum, classes within your major. What ticks you off, man? About CU? Thank you most kindly.

I hope this doesn't sound condescending of me, but do a lot of black people there speak like "you is" "we was" cuz i don't... Sorry I needed to get that question off my chest and ask. Let's just say that I say "like" and "totally" alot. Yeah, let's leave it at that. ARE THERE MIDWESTERN FOLKS LIKE ME AT COLUMBIA!!??!?!?1

By Me1 (Me1) on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 04:06 pm: Edit

"Like" is midwestern? lol We say that all the time in Jersey (at least by me).

By Vivian (Vivian) on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 04:31 pm: Edit

GRRRR thats not really what i meant

By Godis (Godis) on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 04:37 pm: Edit

you'd probably be in the minority, but i'm sure you'd find some midwestern homies around campus.

By Folk_Hero (Folk_Hero) on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 04:44 pm: Edit

Maybe we mid-Atlantic types will do just as well, Viv?

By Vivian (Vivian) on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 05:29 pm: Edit

"Rarrrrrrrrrr," says the lioness.

"You will do just fine."

=)

There's my short story that I just made up. I think it lacked a plot, but I believe it answered your question. (Laugh later.)

Hey, does anyone here talk alot? Because I talk a lot. I'm such an extrovert. I love, love, LOVE people. I like talking, talking, talking. Are you guys shy? I'm the first person to make a move. Godis, are you shy around girls? Ceetostheizzle do you pick your nose when girls aren't watching? And last but not least (Rarrrr, my favorite), Folk do you talk to yourself when your home alone? Say yay if you're a freak of nature.

Yay.

By Theinnocntone (Theinnocntone) on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 07:52 pm: Edit

Hmm, I'm so not the right person to ask about bad things about this school just because I adore it so much.

The Core can be restrictive. Getting through it is a bitch, and it takes up pretty much ALL of your time in the first two years. Most people take only one elective a semester, and a lot of people I know aren't even doing that. That said, I adore lit hum, it was definately my favourite class this semester. However, from what I've heard, that's mainly just because I got lucky and got a teacher I loved. You're pre-assigned for lit hum and for university writing(a class which I disliked with a passion, but hey, it's over), and thus it's really pot luck as to if you get a teacher you like. The language requirement is kinda annoying if you can't test out. Art and music hum are reeeeeeeeal hard to get into freshman year. Science and major cultures are annoying, but there's a LOT of options as to what you can use to fulfill those. Teachers I had this semester were approachable and nice.

The administration is not really particularly user friendly. It can take forever to get stuff done and you have to be pretty persistant.

The city itself I like. Morningside Heights is nice, as it's in Manhatten, but really doesn't feel much like it. It's kinda a self contained lil neighbourhood, but the city is only a short subway ride away. I definately did not take enough advantage of the city this semester and I really hope to do so more after the break. New York itself can be a little opressive sometimes, but I didn't really notice that much coming from central London myself.

Social life works for me, as I'm used to going out to bars with my friends back home. And thats what I do here. However, there are parties on campus, but with the city right THERE, I think we probably have a smaller on campus party scene than many other schools.

The fact that I haven't met THAT many people I only blame myself for as I haven't really made much of an effort to get involved in stuff. However, I love my friends so I don't really feel the need to do so.

As far as living goes, I'm in a single in John Jay. I honestly don't believe that having a single is ANY less social than living in a carman double. If anything, it forces you even more to meet people. I like my space, I have a pretty big room, but most definately do not feel like I am missing out at ALL by having a single. More privacy, if you wanna be social you just have to walk down the hall and people will have their doors open. ALl the freshman dorms are central, so you're always right in the middle of stuff, close to the library etc. Only thing is there isn't THAT much interacting between different dorms. I know very few people in carman. As far as dorms go, Carmen has the rep as the party dorm, but that doesn't mean by any stretch that people in other dorms don't. The LLC...everyone I know that lives there had it as their last choice for housing, but are SO glad they ended up there. Furnald...that's the one I'd be careful of. From what I've heard, it can be lonely. Don't let the promise of a new dorm, AC and a single pursuade ya, it's not that great.

I'm sorry, I'm really not that much help with stuff I don't like. My biggest issue is probably the Core and the resultant inflexibility when it comes to classes. Oh, and the freshman males, but that's a whooooooooooole other story...

By Godis (Godis) on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 - 09:08 pm: Edit

heh, vivian, as you probably can tell, whenever i'm within a 2000 mile distance of a girl, i'll hide in a hole. i'm not shy though.

By Ceetotheizzle (Ceetotheizzle) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 12:04 am: Edit

By Xtoastx (Xtoastx) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 10:28 am: Edit

hahaha the olsen twins...id love to make friends with them just to make fun of them.. my guy friends ould be so jealous!!

By Smartncute04 (Smartncute04) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 02:11 pm: Edit

I am so talkative!!!! I just keep talking and talking and talking...like i am doing right now. Hey, Vivian when we all visit the campus in April no one's gonna be able to get a word in between the two of us.

By Vivian (Vivian) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 03:07 pm: Edit

HAHAHA!!!

Smartncute,

OMG, I know!! That is soooo how I am! When my friends and I are really excited and just YEAH, we all like can't even get words in! It's REALLY funny to listen to us talk. Meeting all of you is going to be awesome.

And April's just around the corner!

Vivian =)

By Mnm86 (Mnm86) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 06:16 pm: Edit

is everybody an extrovert? i'm pretty shy around people i don't know well. i can really shut up like a clam. i'm nervous now. this board is scaring me because (and i know it doesn't fully represent the columbia student body) i'm REALLY not into partying or punk music....

i mean it's awesome if that's your thing, but what other things are people here into?

By Bananabean (Bananabean) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 08:06 pm: Edit

i'm kind of a half-introvert/half-extrovert. i party, but not THAT much. i love all kinds of music, poetry (yeah dorky me :)); I think a lot of my time during freshman year will be spent exploring the city.

By Folk_Hero (Folk_Hero) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 10:21 pm: Edit

Well, I'm a total dork, Mnm86, if that's any comfort to you. My loves are books and art. I can be really hyper around my friends, the way most people can, but I hate those big, loud parties where nobody dances but everybody drinks. The best things are intimate chill sessions with a few friends late at night.

By Folk_Hero (Folk_Hero) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 10:24 pm: Edit

Oh, yes, exploring the city... mmm.. :)

By Godis (Godis) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 10:48 pm: Edit

mnm, don't worry; i'm a lot like you (in the outgoing/shy regard). we'll eventually find SOMETHING to do. :-)

By Garland (Garland) on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 09:43 am: Edit

Godis, Folk Hero, Bananabean, Mnm86--you all sound like my son. He's not a big party type either. Friendly but shy. I'm sure they'll be plenty of all types of people there next year.

By Tellmewhy (Tellmewhy) on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 01:15 pm: Edit

What if you can't dance or never have?

By Vivian (Vivian) on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 02:00 pm: Edit

Then you're a geek!

Just kidding. I'll teach you then, okay? We can grind to R-Kelly's "Ignition."

"Bounce, bounce, bounce.... bounce...It's like murder, she wroooote, once I get you out them clothes..."

Vivian =)

By Dscard (Dscard) on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 04:12 pm: Edit

Vivian, have you seen the parody of 'Ignition' by a bunch of Duke students? For those of you with fast connections, check it out...just do a yahoo search for 'duke ignition', click the first link, and scroll down to 'Fun Stuff'. I know this is the Columbia forum, but it's all good...

By Blondie (Blondie) on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 05:54 pm: Edit

You guys make me wanna go to Columbia! I applied RD, just to have another option if I do get in there. I love fun crazy people, and it sure seems like there are plenty of those there! I love cities. I live in Trenton, NJ so I head up to NYC all the time. There's just so much to do, I'll probably get really distracted from my studies... hehe oh well, I'll manage.

By Smartncute04 (Smartncute04) on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 11:11 pm: Edit

I know what you mean blondie. I get ADD when I go to my saturday morning classes. I cant concentrate with all cool things in the city around columbia. It's like five blocks away from a H&M which is one of my fav stores, and five blocks away from a Popeyes, my fav fast food joint. wooohoo! cant wait
