i'm from nyc... 1600 sat's, pretty good sat2's (all within 750-800 range), tri-varsity athlete, on the board for a couple clubs, honor roll, internship in washington... but i think what did it was the ridiculously great interview (we're both fans of david foster wallace), the piano tape, and the community service award for teaching young kids in kenya how to speak english this past summer. ::shrug:: i can't figure it out, but whatever. best of luck.

By Voigtrob (Voigtrob) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 12:46 pm: Edit

Oh man, I'm so worried now. I'm hoping it's just that the priority mail failed to get here today, not that it wasn't priority mail in the first place. ;P

By Nutmag345 (Nutmag345) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 01:04 pm: Edit

Man I am really feeling it too. Looks like only the admits are getting letters today.

By Chis (Chis) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 01:10 pm: Edit

according to the USPS, priority and first class both take 1-3 days, so everyone should hear today or Monday, regardless of how it's sent

Hey those of you accepted,
I got so excited I feel like I lost 1/2 the things that were inside that folder. Did you get any info about housing? I could've sworn I saw it when I opened the folder, but now it's gone!

Nothing in southwestern CT.

By Gumbino (Gumbino) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 03:35 pm: Edit

Slbi, yes, my son got deferred. I was surprised he got that far. He's an outstanding kid but his stats are average for Princeton. His ECs were not really impressive, compared to some of the lists I've seen posted around here.We live in NJ, about an hour from Princeton.

By Idonno123 (Idonno123) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 03:38 pm: Edit

what did the deferred letter look like? was it priority mail?

By Mr0range (Mr0range) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 03:52 pm: Edit

Nothing here, down in Virginia

By Gumbino (Gumbino) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 04:04 pm: Edit

Idonno: The deferral letter was just regular US mail. Very thin, one page letter inside.

By Goodkid2004 (Goodkid2004) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 04:07 pm: Edit

guys.. my letter had the stamp w/ the date it was mailed and it was DEC 12th (aka. YESTERDAY). So.. don't get your hopes down, especially if you live further away from Pton ;-) Let's hope it comes Monday or something!

By Cobra333 (Cobra333) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 07:14 pm: Edit

did they send out the acceptances through priority mail and the defferals/rejections through reg mail?
did anyone in manhattan get a response?
did anyone in nyc get a deferral/rejection letter?

By Alina (Alina) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 07:28 pm: Edit

cobra 333 i didnt get a letter and i live in staten island....but i think the post office in my neighborhood is slow...cuz i always get things later than the other parts of the island...where do u live...did u also not recieve a letter

By Alina (Alina) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 07:29 pm: Edit

btw congrats to all those who got in....i hope i can join you....but wow...im sooooo jealous lol

By Mzhang23 (Mzhang23) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 07:36 pm: Edit

no one in nyc has gotten deferred or rejected. All the responses that I have heard from NYC have been positive ones.

Acceptances are sent priority,
Deferrals and rejections via regular mail.

By Cobra333 (Cobra333) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 07:37 pm: Edit

hey i live in manhattan. All the mail in manhattan comes through the main post office on west 34th street. Mail in Manhattan is notoriously slow because every single piece of mail that comes in is sorted out at the main office first and then sent to the local post offices and finally to the carriers.

By the way priority mail just means that it weighs over 13 ounces, which makes sense acceptance letters contain more info, and takes the same samount of time as regular mail (not sure).

Once again anybody from Manhattan get a response?

By Alina (Alina) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 07:54 pm: Edit

Beenthereil where do u live? is there really mail on sundays in dec before xmas?

By Mzhang23 (Mzhang23) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 07:58 pm: Edit

I live in manhattan. I have only heard of acceptances.

By Beenthereil (Beenthereil) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 08:05 pm: Edit

We live in Frankfort, Illinois...It is a Southwestern suburb of Chicagoland...near Tinley Park, Mokena, Orland Park.

Yes, Alina. Besides there being a Santa...there is mail on Sundays in this part of the world during the Christmas holiday season.

By Gk06 (Gk06) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 08:15 pm: Edit

many ppl got accepted i see. take a look at the harvard board; nearly everyone with 1600's are deferred. You lucky tigers! Good luck all of you.

By Alina (Alina) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 08:23 pm: Edit

only 6 people got accepted....is that it...does this really mean that everyone else who didnt get a letter today got deferred or denied???

By Anna88 (Anna88) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 08:27 pm: Edit

What state do you live in?

By Beenthereil (Beenthereil) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 08:31 pm: Edit

No, Alina. What that means is that the mail hasn't reached the rest of the country.

I know a recruited athlete for baseball that got in and he lives on Staten Island.

We live in Illinois. Received no mail today except the usual Christmas cards and bills and junk mail!

Tomorrow is another day.

Hi guys. To all of the new york city acceptances: what boroughs do you come from, respectively? I applied ed and live in Brooklyn. Still holding out hope that somehow Brooklyn was skipped over.

By Alina (Alina) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 09:09 pm: Edit

im from staten island i'm hoping for the same thing

By Alina (Alina) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 09:54 pm: Edit

what i mean is the people that didnt recieve letters and live in ny are probably deferred/denied right? bcuz the acceptees got their letters in priority mail while the other were in regular mail which would be later and thus come on monday

By Baseballiscool6 (Baseballiscool6) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 10:30 pm: Edit

Not true. I am from Manhattan, and I haven't heard of a single person (besides whoever has posted here) get in. So I really would doubt that everyone pton accepted from nyc has the letter already. Most priority mail is 2 day, and I'm 100% positive they mailed friday.

By Alina (Alina) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 10:39 pm: Edit

baseballiscool6 thank you so much cuz i really thought i was definitely deferred, not that there isnt a chance that im still deferred but it makes me feel better that i have at least something to look forward to...or be scared of lol

By Alina (Alina) on Saturday, December 13, 2003 - 11:20 pm: Edit

i hope so...i hate waiting....sometimes i wonder if the admissions boards are just sadistic and make us wait during weekends with pton as a main distraction aah lol...

By Mzhang23 (Mzhang23) on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 12:00 am: Edit

nope, they were making decisions down to the last minute. And janet rapelye had to personally sign each letter, as well as write congratulations.

She must have carpal tunnel syndrome by now.

By Rdb9986 (Rdb9986) on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 12:13 am: Edit

alina-i got my letter today--live in westchester county, ny...don't worry I am sure that plenty of acceptances coming in monday's mail--there probably was a logical reason for some to get it and some not...I know of several people who are still waiting to find out, and assume that he will be accepted because of how well-qualified he is. do not lose hope.

Acceptance letter reads,

Dear xxx:

Congratulations! The committee has reviewed your application and has admitted you to the Class of 2008. We had a powerful early decision pool and your credentials stood out from the other files. Your academic accomplishments, extra-curricular activities and strong personal qualities were deemed by the readers to be exceptional and ones we wanted here at Princeton. We are delighted to accept you.

the next paragraph is about financial aid.

The following one deals with withdrawing all other apps.

Once again, congratulations. We are pleased to be sending you this good news and especially to be welcoming you to Princeton. Have a wonderful holiday season.

Sincerely,
Janet Rapelye
Dean of Admission.

Signature, and a written "Congratulations!"

OK, this is weird, sitting here trying to write about Rome and what the hell happened there while I know that in less than 24 short hours, my entire life could change. I wish it had been Saturday because this wait is killing me. Anyway, this is probably the last time I'm going to see this site before I find out, so I just wanted to wish everyone good luck and to say remember - deferal does not equal rejection (or so I keep telling myself) GOOD LUCK!

haha, Rome? wtf? and as for deferrals...I would like to believe the same, but doesn't deferral mean "If you do something drastic, we'll let you in"? How much time is there between receiving the deferral and being looked at for RD?

Anyway, it's icy as a mother outside, and if the mail doesn't come tomorrow I think I'll castrate myself or something. :-)

Good luck to everyone, and I hope to see you in a few months!!

Congrats to all the new '08s from a Princeton '07! Just wanted to say welcome and congratulations!

By the way, Mzhang - did you visit this year? One of my best friends went to Collegiate, and I met a bunch of kids from your class who came to visit with him

By Mzhang23 (Mzhang23) on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 10:02 pm: Edit

Yeah, I visited Pton three times this year before I chose Pton over Yale: once in March, once in September, and once in October.

Who is the collegiate kid you speak of? the classes are all really small, so I basically know everyone in the school.

I've basically seen every '07 Collegiate kid on campus except for Towsen - I mainly hung out with Justin, Mike, and Russ when I visited though.

By Natalia (Natalia) on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 10:07 pm: Edit

I speak of James (he lives right next door)... I also really like Donell, but he's '06. And I think I met Russ once when I was hanging out with James.

By Mzhang23 (Mzhang23) on Sunday, December 14, 2003 - 10:17 pm: Edit

wait... are you the one who told me "James is my best friend!" when I was visiting mathey?

I have a faint recollection of meeting you. This was during the humanities symposium weekend.

And yes, Dan-el is cool. Yup, that's how you spell it - Dan-el.

Mzhang - haha yeah I probably did tell you that James was my bff, because I say that to everyone... yeah Dan-el is cool... sorry I got it wrong, I never actually spell out his name, I just say hi to him when I see him with James.

any reply from princeton email to anyone

By Gumbino (Gumbino) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 01:17 pm: Edit

OK y'all, at least I posted about a deferral. Anybody get a denial letter yet? (It would take a gutsy person to post publicly about his or her rejection, but maybe one of you knows someone who got the bad news already.)
My question is, does Princeton send a deferral letter to EVERY early decision applicant who isn't admitted, or are there some outright rejection notices?

By Lessthan3 (Lessthan3) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 01:33 pm: Edit

one kid from my school got flat out rejected

By Lessthan3 (Lessthan3) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 01:38 pm: Edit

i think anyone who is posting here obviously has a serious want to go there and obviously has been working hard to go there... and princeton tends to defer just about everyone who is obviously working very hard....

but yea, you and me gumbino- the deferal crowd, are you planning on doing anytyhing/sending anything additional to see if it helps?

one of my teachers said they would write me an extra recomendation letter because they were so shocked i did not get in, and supposedly sending extra stuff is good- but i have no idea what else to send.

By Gumbino (Gumbino) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 02:12 pm: Edit

Thanks for that info, Lessthan3. I should add that it's my son who is the applicant (I posted that in my initial comment but it's been buried in the avalanche of replies since Saturday).

The reason I asked is that everyone else who applied ED from my son's school also got deferrals. This has led them to speculate amongst themselves that deferral = rejection.

To answer your question about sending anything extra in: I have heard that another great recommendation can sometimes help. Any really outstanding awards you've received, or great achievements since submitting the ED app might help (but you already knew that).

There seems to be a fine line, however, between encouraging admissions officers to give your app a re-look, and alienating them by sending in too much stuff.

So I'm as much in the dark as you about what to do. My son thinks he might take the SAT for a third time in January; and, if he's declared a National Merit finalist in February, will forward that information to Princeton too. (But I doubt that even a perfect SAT score/National Merit finalist status impress them much, though -- Princeton applicants with those on their resumes are a-dime-a-dozen.)

By Dad1 (Dad1) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 03:12 pm: Edit

Alina: Sorry to hear that you were deferred. I am the parent of an applicant. For what it's worth, at several colleges we visited this Spring (including Princeton) we were told by the admissions office that a surprisingly large number of applicants are admitted from the "deferred" early admissions pool, so don't give up hope. Also, please keep in mind that, although Princeton is an excellent college, there are many others at which you will succeed and which you will enjoy. Be sad for a moment, then move on to embrace a wonderful future. You are surely a talented person, otherwise you wouldn't have made it this far. Best of luck!

S got deferral letter today too.

My understanding of Ivy deferrals is that the odds shift to the overall probability, meaning that about one of 10 or so is admitted. There is another post on the UVa website that suggests their % is higher than that, but I dont know what their application profile is, early v late numbers, etc.

One student from our HS last year was deferred at Harvard, and then admitted RD. Same person was also not admitted at YPS, Duke,Dartmouth, but in at Cornell, Brown, However, in general its not good news since all the data suggests that your best chance is ED.

Will be interesting to see if the Daily Princetonian prints a story next month about how many Early Decision acceptances there were this year under the new admissions director.

By Lessthan3 (Lessthan3) on Monday, December 15, 2003 - 04:01 pm: Edit

yeah deferrals do have a good chance, one of my teachers helped a deferred student get into columbia regular decision last year by writing an additional recomendation letter and she offered to do that for me, so i hope it helps.

to saccharine- my deferral letter was sent regular mail... so hearing from fedex might be a great thing! but you are also international so i do not know. GOOD luck!!!

I don't know what to think...just in a state of shock. I mean, I knew my chances were slim, but this is so unbelievable. When I saw the thin envelope, my heart froze. My life is screwed, there just isn't anything left in my life. I seriously spent the last two damn years working for this, and I failed. Desperately trying to cheer myself up, but every moment is so painful.

To nutmag345, please see my earlier post. Princeton is a wonderful place, but there are many others, and you may still be admitted to Princeton. You just need to endure the inconvenience of waiting til April and doing all those other applications. Have faith in yourself, focus on continuing to do what it takes, and you will succeed.

gk06...Haven't received anything in the mail on the 15th...hopefully today the 16th.

Talked with the coach...a kid from New Jersey was accepted and two kids from Texas were accepted. Couple of others to go.

If those that are waiting get accepted, I would guess that this will be one of the best recruiting classes in a long time.

Really haven't paid much attention to the Ivies in baseball because I had a son that played at Mississippi State and then played pro ball for 5 years. The younger son, who is being recruited by the Tigers and Coach Bradley, is bigger, stronger, faster and smarter than my older son.

Interview went OK, it was the interviewers first one so it was kind of awkward at times, but nothing that should have kept me out.

Essays were good, proofread by mom and brother and looked at by my SAT verbal tutor.

2 glowing recs from a history and english teacher, plus an optional rec from band teacher.

Plus, my brother is at Princeton and is doing quite well.

So, my question is...what exactly are they looking for?

By Prep (Prep) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 04:23 pm: Edit

I am shocked by how much drama and unjustified importance all of you put on this. Your life doesn't change becuase you got in, or got deferred or you got rejected from Princeton. Get a life, get a life, get a life.......

There are many great universities in America and Europe, and there are many people who have had wildly successful, happy and meaningful lives even though they did not get into Princeton. The last time I checked, 99.9% of Nobel, Marshall, Fullbright, Rhodes, Academy, Pultizer, Tony etc. winners were NOT graduates of Princeton......God did not attend Princeton; Muhammed did not attend Princeton; Mother Teresa did not attend Princeton; Lincoln did not attend Princeton; and neither did many other great human beings.

By Lessthan3 (Lessthan3) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 04:26 pm: Edit

I don't think that is why people want to go there, Prep. People want to go somewhere they will be challenged and happy- maybe this is the place.

Shame on you for discouraging people to have something they are passionate about. We all know it is JUST a school, but that doesnt mean we should not be allowed to lust after going there and strive for it.

Hey all!! I've never posted before--I've merely been watching the process and reading up on all of you (and getting the crap scared out of me). I just wanted to say "HELLO" and congratulations to all that were accepted.

I am honored to say that I am a Tiger along with all of you. Woo woo. Princeton Class of '08.

By Beenthereil (Beenthereil) on Tuesday, December 16, 2003 - 09:10 pm: Edit

prep...Why not be happy for those that were accepted? Be a bit disappointed for those that were deferred and be encouraging for RD time.

It was a terrific moment in this house when my son came waltzing in with his mail.

He, like so many others, dream of a day like this. Do you dream? Isn't it nice when a dream comes true?

Gees...some people always dwell on negative things.

Congrats to all who have been accepted.

My son, Ryan Petrulis, Lincoln Way East, Frankfort (just Southwest of Chicago), Illinois is a proud member of the Princeton University, Class of 2008.

Now I need to get a quick supply of Tiger-wear!

I got deferred. :( Weird, since I applied last year early as well, and was deferred and then not accepted in the spring. Just thought I would get a straight answer this time.

Hey Metacrawler
Anyhting else except acadmeics EC's etc.
I don't think they take too many international students early, atleast looks like here. Except a couple from Europe no international has got in from CC members.

By Kshroff1 (Kshroff1) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 06:35 am: Edit

Does anybody know their policy regarding Internationals early.....
and they should let us know if they don't plan to take too many internationals early.

By Mzhang23 (Mzhang23) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 09:53 am: Edit

Like Harvard and Yale, I am sure that there are no quotas for internationals.

Hello. I'm from Singapore. I've just gotten deferred as has my friend. Our letters are taking forever to come so we've resorted to calling. It seems like all the Asians got deferred so there wasn't very much point applying early was there?

By Kshroff1 (Kshroff1) on Thursday, December 18, 2003 - 01:01 pm: Edit

What are your stats Natureboy and upandover? (and what were the stats of your friends who got deferred). I'm just trying to figure out if all the Asians just got universally deferred or what????

SAT I 1500 (V 710, M 790)
SAT II (Writing 790, Math II 780, World History 720)

Got Straight As for my Preliminary Exminations and predicted straight As for A Levels. 9 As in O Levels.

I'm from HC. You (Upandover?)

It seems like universal deferrment doesn't it? I have classmates who are in Stanford and Upenn already.

By Saccharine (Saccharine) on Friday, December 19, 2003 - 09:47 am: Edit

I'm sorry to see so many int'ls deferred ;(.

Princeton is really tough on us; see last's year profile at http://www.princeton.edu/pr/facts/profile/03/08.htm : out of 2,430 int'l applicants, only 138 were admitted (less than 6%).

But I don't mean to discourage you or anything, I just want to prove how hard the admissions are. As far as I know, 3 int'ls from CC board have been accepted so far (all Europeans - UK, Slovakia and me from Poland).

Good luck in RD round!
