Discus: Ivy League Schools: Yale University: 2002 - 2003 Archive: Chances
By Ladymadchan (Ladymadchan) on Saturday, October 25, 2003 - 05:49 pm: Edit

I just wanted to ask you guys some questions about admissions and whether you guys think that I have a chance at the IVY league?

-hoping to apply to Yale, Harvard, Cornel, Brown, U of Mich, Rochester

-going to be applying to Yale EA too next year

-*If* I get in, I'm just going to apply to Harvard, I don't, then well, I'm going to apply to a whole round of schools

-sixteen year old Singhalese girl from Canada applying next year

-first generation college student, (parents didn't even make it out of high school)

-We aren't rich either, and aren't poor on the other hand, though we aren't very well off

-scored a 1590 on the a 10 Real's

-grades are top rate

-taking the full IB diploma, expected to do very well

-going to take 4 APs this year, but I'm going to have to study on my own since my school doesn't offer AP courses (can anyone suggest a good series of AP books to study from)

-haven't taken the SAT II's yet, but I'm going to take them in June

-taking most of the extracirculars that my school offers :

soccer

basketball

tennis

school reach (captain)

quest (co-captain)

head of academic team sports

student council executive

co captain of the math team

taught, English, French and Buddhism in my spare time

volunteering in a hospital

the MC at several cultural events for the Sri Lankan community

My school's really new, we've only had high school for like ten years, so there aren't a lot of established things to get into like newspapers, research opportunities (Canadians don't even have those) etc. Anyways, they wouldn't even let us start a newspaper, *maybe next year*.

I'm hoping to break 500 volunteer hours before the deadline

Awards -highest standings in math, sciences, and social sciences, awarded freshman year (this plaque is only awarded in freshman year, I didn't lose it to someone else the next year)

-three years of being an honours student

-won the top prizes in my school's first science fair and speech contest

-numerous math contest awards of distinction

-numerous 90% achievement awards in : English, French, Math (taking Calc this year), the Sciences (Bio, Chem and Physics), Geography, History,

I'm going to be in high school for 5 years Will these universities look at this negatively? When I was 12 years old, in the span of just a couple of months, (like six I think), I got my English 9 credit before I was 13. I don't know how special that is over in the states, but I'm Canada, it kind of is. They tend to keep children in the grade that they're in. I started grade nine when I was 13, but I'm staying another year and intend to make full use of it. I'm taking all my grade 12's this year though (7 subjects plus 4 on my own). In addition to my 2 IB subject exams (2 for each subject), I'm also going to take 4 Aps. Our school doesn't offer these courses, but I'm going to study for them anyways. Towards the end of the year, in the span of just a couple of weeks, I'd be taking 19 exams. Will taking all of these things outweight the extra year? I don't really know whether you guys have to take another exam in addition to the AP exam for those AP courses, so I have no idea how any of it really works and whether the 19 exams that I am taking (plus 3 sat II's) are something out of the norm. Anways, I guess I have some time to go, tell me if there's anything else I can do to increase my chances of getting into the IVY league.

Sorry long post ...

Thanks everyone!
