from the pics that i've seen of columbia, they seemed to be somewhat "confined". all the buildings were located around a relatively small yard...How large is the campus?

I don't think that Columbia has an actual campus. I mean, it's in the city. It's definitely not as integrated as somewhere like Brown

Columbia definitely has an "actual campus." It is enclosed on all sides by gates. There are lawns and dorm buildings and libraries and all the things that make up a typical campus. It is not very big, but certainly qualifies as a campus, as opposed to something like NYU.
